Chapter 167 Plain Rejection
Nina kept a polite smile on her face.
“Mrs. Mercer, what brings you over so early in the day?”
Her parents had already headed out to work, leaving her alone at home.
Seeing Nina still in her sleepwear, Cecilia spoke warmly.

“You just got up, haven’t you? I brought you some premium health supplements. Celebrities like you always stay up late working, and that’s terrible for your skin.”
She pushed a whole box of pricey wellness products toward Nina. Nina glanced at them casually, feeling no interest in such expensive goods.
“Thanks so much for the thought. Did you come here for something specific today?”
“Of course I did.”
Cecilia put on a regretful look.
“If Katrina hadn’t stepped in back then, you and Chase would have been together long ago. I’ve always felt upset about that. Even Chase and I hated the idea when you told him not to get divorced last night.”
She sounded utterly sincere.
“You’re the only one I’ve ever wanted for my son’s wife. Nina, could you do me a favor?”
“What is it you want me to do?”
“Mercer Group is stuck in a tough spot right now. I know you still have feelings for Chase, and he’s always been head over heels for you. If you marry into our family and stand beside him at the press conference to sort out all the trouble, the company will surely pull through this crisis. Our two families could grow even closer through this marriage. It would be perfect for everyone.”
Nina nearly laughed out loud at such shameless words.
Perfect for everyone? It was surely a win for the Mercer family. They would gain a powerful connection through the Tann family, help Chase fix his ruined image, and get rid of all their current troubles easily.

But what about her? She would get dragged online and labeled a homewrecker, accused of breaking up a family. Her reputation and career would be completely destroyed.
Nina took a slow sip of her coffee and stayed silent.
Growing uneasy at her lack of response, Cecilia hurried to add more persuasion.
“I know this request is sudden… but think about it. Once you marry Chase, I’ll treat you like my own daughter. Chase will dote on you endlessly too. You won’t even need to work a single day. You can just live comfortably as a wealthy housewife. You don’t even have to have kids. We already have Wilder around.”
“Mrs. Mercer.”
Nina set down her coffee mug gently.
“I think you’ve got things all wrong.”
“Wrong?”
“I gave him that piece of advice last night only out of old friendship. That doesn’t mean I want to marry him.”
The warm smile on Cecilia’s face froze at once.
“I’ve never even been in a serious relationship, and I have no plans to get married anytime soon. I’ve been telling Chase to cherish Katrina all this time. After all, she is his legal wife and Wilder’s birth mother. I have no wish to get tangled up in all these messy family disputes.”
Her meaning was crystal clear. She was an untouched wealthy young lady with a bright future ahead, while Chase already had a wife and a child. There was no reason for her to lower herself and suffer grievances in the Mercer family.
Besides, she had built a successful career and came from a well–off family. She had absolutely no need to settle down as a housewife for anyone. What was more, the Mercer family had never been half as wealthy as the Tanns, past or present.
Cecilia let out an awkward stiff laugh.
She still remembered how Nina used to throw caution to the wind just for Chase’s sake. She never expected Nina to grow so sharp and hard to fool now. All her plans had fallen flat.
“If you don’t have anything else to say, I’m afraid I have to head out soon.”
Nina
put her cup away, leaving her no room to keep talking, then turned to the maid.

“See Mrs. Mercer out for me.”
“Yes, Ms. Tann.”
The maid stepped forward politely.
“This way please, Mrs. Mercer.”
Cecilia could no longer keep up her pleasant manner and had to leave. On her way out, she even overheard the two household maids whispering quietly about her.
