Unlike Chase’s reckless impatience, she said calmly, “If you take this boy, what’s in it for me? He’s my husband’s illegitimate child. I can’t just hand him over for nothing.”

Nina let out a cold laugh at Cecilia’s words.

That was just like her–always trying to profit before doing anything.

When Marvin started to speak, ready to offer Cecilia something, Nina cut him off. “Mrs. Mercer, if word gets out about how you’ve abused Jensen, it will only ruin the Mercer family’s reputation. We’re trying to help you, yet you demand favors? We have nothing to give you. We might as well take this to court. If this goes to the police, your actions could land you in jail. And our Tann family will still gain custody of Jensen either way.”

Cecilia’s face paled at Nina’s warning.

“Mom, just sign it! I never want to see this bastard again!”

Chase was eager to be rid of Jensen. Now that the chance was right in front of him, he wanted the burden gone as soon as possible.

Cecilia felt the same way, but the thought of gaining nothing in return left a bitter taste in her mouth.

Seeing her hesitation, Nina turned to her parents. “Mom, Dad, stop being kind. We tried to help her out of respect for the past, but she won’t accept it. Let’s just go to the police. We’re wasting our time here.”

When Nina actually turned toward the car, Cecilia panicked. “I’ll sign! I’ll sign right now!”

She grabbed the pen and signed her name without even reading the documents.

Watching from a distance, Nina smiled faintly.

“Take him. Just please don’t call the police!”

Cecilia valued her reputation above all else. She couldn’t bear being labeled a cruel, heartless

woman.

Esther ignored her and helped Jensen into the car.

Nina saw that Jensen’s fever was severe, and the slap from Cecilia had left him half–conscious.

She thought back to her past life. After Jensen was found by the Grey family, he became their heir and fought Chase fiercely for years. No doubt the abuse he suffered at the Mercers‘ had fueled that fire.

Nina said, “Mom, Jensen’s fever is really bad. We should take him to the hospital first.”

“Right, the hospital.” Esther had been too flustered to think clearly earlier. She turned to the driver. “Sam, hurry to the hospital.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Esther looked sadly at Jensen, who lay weakly in Nina’s arms. “This boy never knew his mother, and he suffered so much with the Mercers. It’s heartbreaking.”

“Mom, Jensen is family now. With the Tanns behind him, no one will ever hurt him again.”

Esther smiled proudly, “I was worried you might not want him. You’re a wonderful girl, Nina.”

How could Nina not agree?

Even without knowing Jensen’s future status, she couldn’t abandon him after everything he’d done for her.

Marvin sighed from the front seat. He never imagined Cecilia could be so cruel to a child.
