Nina hung her head low. She knew she had been far too careless this time. She just never expected Katrina would lose her head so quickly and send her own father to harm her.

“Do you know who the man that attacked you was?”

Jensen’s sudden question made Nina lift her gaze. He had seen David back when he came to Linholt High years ago, and she wondered if he still recognized his face.

“I know he is Katrina’s father.”

She stopped there, choosing not to tell Jensen all that had been said between her and David earlier.

Jensen fell silent for a short while before speaking again. “Leave this whole matter to me. I will handle it properly.”

“No need, I can deal with it myself…”

“Chase has feelings for you.”

Jensen cut her off straight away.

“That’s why Katrina wanted to hurt you, isn’t it?” he went on.

“I’m not sure about that.”

“You know the truth deep down,” Jensen spoke in a calm tone. “I don’t care what you think, nor whether your feelings for him are real or fake. Once something like this happens once, it will happen again. If you don’t want to keep facing such dangers, you’d better cut off all contact with Chase completely.”

Nina could have sworn she caught a hint of jealousy hidden in his words.

“I will break things off with him,” Nina replied. “Just not right now.”

Jensen’s eyes dimmed slightly. “Is he really that important to you?”

“I’ve only ever been playing along with him, nothing more.”

Jensen had noticed back in their high school days that Nina treated Chase differently. Her feelings toward him were tangled and complicated, as if Chase was someone utterly irreplaceable in her heart.

No more words were exchanged for the rest of the ride.

Kent pulled up outside the Tann Villa. Marvin and Esther had been waiting anxiously at home ever since they got the news. They hurried over the moment they saw Nina return.

Esther looked her all over anxiously. “Honey, did you get hurt anywhere? Are you feeling unwell at all?”

“I’m fine, Mom,” Nina soothed her gently. “Jensen brought me back safe and sound.”

Esther finally let out a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness you’re unhurt Come on, hurry inside.”

Esther had asked the maid to prepare dinner early that evening, yet Nina never showed up. The meal had long gone cold, and all they got instead was a phone call from Jensen saying Nina had been abducted.

“What exactly happened? Have they caught the person who took you?”

“Yes, they have,” Jensen answered before Nina could speak. “He’s already in police custody giving his statement, and there will be a clear outcome soon enough.”

“Who is this person? Do they hold some old grudge against our family?”

They had spent time going over all the people the Tanns might have offended over the years. The family always treated others with kindness and never pushed anyone to desperate straits, let alone gave anyone reason to kidnap their daughter.

“The investigation is still ongoing. Please don’t worry, everything will be sorted out.” Jensen glanced toward Nina. “She still has injuries on her body. She needs plenty of rest right now.”

“You’re absolutely right. She’s had a terrible fright. Rest is exactly what she needs.”

Esther then called out toward the kitchen. “Martha, warm up a glass of milk and bring it up to Nina’s room later.”

“Right away, ma’am.”

Nina stood up from her seat. “Mom, I’m heading upstairs then.”

“Go on up. Make sure you finish the milk before you sleep!”

“I will.”

As Nina headed upstairs, she cast one last glance at Jensen. She could tell he had deliberately kept certain details hidden, keeping her parents from finding out the incident was linked to the Sawyers.

If her parents learned the truth, they would surely figure out she still kept in touch with Chase. Given how strict they were with her, it would only end up upsetting them greatly.
