Chapter 19 The Mercers Are Going Bankrupt!
“You’re my girlfriend, Katrina. You don’t owe anyone an explanation.”
“But… I took the guy Nina liked…”
Katrina bit her lip, looking guilty.

Chase scoffed, “Katrina, you’re too kind. You don’t have to feel bad for someone as evil as Nina.”
Listening to their conversation made Nina feel sick to her stomach.
She stopped, turned around, and walked straight back to them.
Under everyone’s gaze, Nina pulled a water bottle out of her bag and splashed the entire contents directly onto Katrina.
“Ahh!”
Katrina was soaked head to toe, her school uniform dripping wet.
Seeing Katrina get bullied, Chase snapped at once, “Nina! What the hell is wrong with you?”
Nina said coldly, “Now you don’t have to feel guilty anymore.”
With that, she turned and walked away.
Chase raised his hand to hit her, but the school security guard walked out just then. Katrina burst into tears, looking utterly victimized.
The incident of Nina splashing Katrina at the school gate spread like wildfire.
Students in class began giving Nina strange looks. Everyone assumed she was just jealous that Katrina had won Chase over.
They thought she’d lashed out because Chase didn’t love her back.
But finals were approaching, and no one wanted trouble. With sophomore year already stressful, the whole thing became nothing more than gossip between classes.
If anything, the incident only brought Chase and Katrina closer. They even started kissing secretly in the corner of the sports field. Dora and Bruce lectured them repeatedly, but it did no good.

Teenage rebellion ran deep. Chase and Katrina ignored every warning. Because of the Mercer family’s influence, the teachers couldn’t punish Chase freely. To make things worse, Chase publicly defended Katrina and threatened the homeroom teacher not to bother her.
The whole grade thought Chase was being heroic. Only Nina rolled her eyes.
Eventually, the teachers gave up and let them do whatever they wanted. If things got too out of hand, they’d just expel them both.
Three days before finals, the classroom was tense during lunch break. Since moving in with the Tanns, Jensen had thrived. His grades were better than ever.
He’d always been top five in the grade, but now he was firmly ranked first.
With Jensen’s help, Nina’s grades had stabilized in the top ten.
“Did you hear? The Mercers are going bankrupt!”
“No way! The Mercers are one of the biggest families in Linholt!”
“It’s true! My dad said Chase’s father left tons of debt before he died. The company’s been struggling for ages–they’re basically broke already!”
Whispers about the Mercer family’s collapse filled the room.
The secret was finally out.
Nina had told her father to cut all funding to the Mercer Group months ago. Now they had no support. If they didn’t find new investors within a month, the Mercers would collapse completely.
Chase’s title as one of Linholt’s Four Young Masters would be gone too.
Just then, Katrina walked into class. She and Chase had been skipping school constantly to go
out.
As soon as she entered, Tara rushed over. “Katrina! Did you hear Chase’s family is going bankrupt?”
