Chapter 221 Rumors Debunked

“Thank me?”

“Thanks for pulling me out of that awkward fix.”

“From the way you put it, it sounds like Jensen is the one clinging onto you.”

“That’s exactly it. I only came to Halmont to relax and clear my head. If he follows me all the way here, isn’t that just pestering me?”

“So you hold no feelings for him at all.”

“There’s absolutely nothing between us. I doubt he even likes me truly. He only keeps an eye on me because my parents once did him a big favor. My folks even started thinking I was seeing someone lately, that’s why he rushed over to look for me. They really worry over nothing.

Jacob nearly burst out laughing listening to her words.

He had never heard any young heiress talk so casually like this.

Julian shot him a sharp glance, and Jacob quickly clamped his mouth shut.

Sensing Julian’s hostility toward her fading a little, Nina spoke on purpose, “May I know your name, sir? Did I send you an invitation to the party?”

“I came here specially to meet you. Yet you kept me waiting alone for over an hour. How do you plan to make it up to me?”

“Then… how about I treat you to dinner?”

Nina smoothly took the chance to ease the tension. Julian seemed quite satisfied with this reply.

“I know a fantastic restaurant nearby. Let me take you there. Does that sound good to you?”

“Sure, I’m actually starving anyway.”

Jacob could hardly believe her words. He had watched her pile up all sorts of desserts and pastries at the banquet earlier. It amazed him how she could eat so much while wearing such a tight evening gown.

“Get in the car.”

Julian gestured for her to get on board, and Nina settled herself comfortably in the back seat.

Nina spoke up on purpose. “You haven’t told me your name yet. I caught your secretary calling you Mr. Belmont or Mr. Beaumont earlier. Which one is it exactly?”

“Belmont,” Julian answered calmly without any trace of unease.

Knowing he was clearly keeping his real identity hidden, Nina put on a look of sudden realization. “I see.”

“You don’t seem fond of formal banquets.”

“I never enjoy these social events at all. My parents thought I ought to get familiar with the local circle and make more connections here, so they made all the arrangements behind my

back.”

Nina lied effortlessly as well.

She had dragged her feet showing up on purpose just to create this chance encounter with Julian, and it seemed her plan had worked perfectly.

Driving up front, Jacob chimed in. “What a coincidence. My boss hates these gatherings too. He wouldn’t have come tonight if not just to see you.”

“Come see me? What’s there to see about me? I’m just an ordinary person after all,” Nina spoke in a dismissive tone.

Julian stole glances at her beside him. She looked even more stunning in person than in her photos, and her features bore a striking resemblance to the girl he had spotted abroad years

ago.

He broke the silence and asked, “I’ve heard rumors saying you meddled in other people’s relationships. Is that true?”

“Meddle in relationships? Do you mean Mr. Grey and Ms. Beaumont?”

“I’m talking about Chase Mercer and Katrina Sawyer.”

Julian had already dug deep into Nina’s affairs long before. He knew perfectly well why Audrey kept backing Chase up-it was all because Chase had grown bitter from unrequited love and spread rumors on purpose.

He had thought the whole story sounded ridiculous when he first heard it, but now that Nina was right in front of him, he wanted to hear the truth straight from her.

“Yet everyone says Chase was willing to abandon his wife and child just for you. Surely that part is true?”

“When a man gets infatuated and decides to leave his family for another woman, how can it ever be the woman’s fault? It should all fall on his own selfish choice,” Nina retorted calmly.

“I have never crossed any boundaries with Chase in the slightest. All those messy rumors are nothing but his own wild imagination. I even tried to persuade them to fix their marriage. It’s so unfair to label me a homewrecker over such groundless talk.”

“You do have a point there.”

“It’s far more than just a point, it’s plain common sense!”

“Alright, you’re totally right.”

Julian couldn’t help gazing at her with renewed interest.

The car soon pulled up outside the restaurant.

Jacob spoke up, “We’ve arrived, sir, Ms. Tann. You may get out now.”
