Chapter 220 A Hasty Escape

“I’m so sorry! So sorry!”

Nina kept her head low and hurried straight past Julian.

Julian froze the instant he caught sight of her retreating figure. He was certain he had seen that exact silhouette wandering the streets overseas once before.

“Sir?”

“Did you get a clear look at the woman who just rushed by?”

“I think… that was Ms. Tann.”

Julian’s brows drew tight. The faint favorable impression he’d had from seeing that familiar back vanished completely the moment he knew it was Nina.

“Go check it out.”

“Aren’t we leaving now, sir?”

Julian paid no heed to his secretary’s question. He had waited more than an hour just to meet her, and leaving like this would feel far too unfair.

Inside the ballroom, Nina made no effort to greet any guests or strike up conversations with anyone. She simply sat alone, quietly enjoying pastries and light desserts.

Her plain white gown blended easily into the crowd, making it hard for Julian to keep track of her movements more than once. His secretary grew rather puzzled watching her odd behavior.

“What on earth is she doing? Doesn’t she know greeting guests is basic social etiquette?”

Nina kept glancing down at her phone every now and then, then downed another glass of sparkling wine, looking as if she planned to slip away as soon as possible.

The secretary leaned in and spoke softly, “Sir, it looks like Ms. Tann is getting ready to leave.”

Nina checked the time on her phone and grew anxious to head out. Right at that moment, Jensen arrived outside the venue. He scanned the surrounding area and turned to Kent beside him.

“Find Nina.”

“Right away, sir.”

Jensen began searching every corner of the banquet hall. Panicked, Nina quickly ducked into a quiet corner, which happened to lead her straight toward Julian.

Julian cast a calm glance at her and frowned slightly. Does this woman have no idea who Iam?

“Sir, I truly apologize for running into you earlier. Could you help me slip out quietly?”

Nina looked up at him with soft, pleading eyes that were hard for any man to turn down. Julian had been about to refuse, but she spoke urgently before he could reply.

“Please! If you don’t help me, I’ll never get away from him!”

She looked utterly desperate to escape.

A hint of curiosity flickered across Julian’s face. “Very well, come with me.”

His secretary, Jacob Donovan, was utterly stunned, never expecting his strict employer to agree to such an odd request so easily.

“Jacob, escort this young lady out safely.”

“Yes, sir.”

Jacob gestured for Nina to follow him away, while Julian turned and headed straight toward Jensen.

Jensen frowned the second his eyes landed on Julian.

“I never thought I’d run into you here, Mr. Grey,” Julian greeted calmly.

“I recall you never cared much for social banquets in the past.”

“That was then,” Julian replied. “I’ve heard you’re quite close with Ms. Tann. Since she’s new in Halmont, I figured I ought to play the gracious host and welcome her properly.”

His words held hidden meaning, and Jensen caught on at once.

“Have you already met her?”

“Not yet.” Julian feigned genuine disappointment. “That’s why I came to ask you. Could it be that you’ve hidden her away somewhere?”

‘Don’t joke around like that.” Jensen’s tone turned cold once more.

He had been searching for Nina nonstop this whole time. She was still unfamiliar with the city, and it would spell trouble if the wrong people set their sights on her here.

Julian kept stealing subtle glances to make sure Nina had safely left with Jacob. Only then did he speak again.

“What a shame I didn’t get to meet the famous Ms. Tann today. Hopefully I’ll get that chance sometime soon. I’ll take my leave now. Mr. Grey. Until next time.”

With that, he turned and walked toward the exit.

By then, Kent had finished checking every inch of the hall and returned to Jensen’s side.

“I’ve searched everywhere, sir. There’s no sign of Ms. Tann anywhere.”

Jensen knitted his brows tightly in deep worry. Where on earth could she have vanished to out of nowhere?

Meanwhile outside the hotel building, Nina had successfully made her escape. She held out her hand toward the approaching Julian with a sincere look.

“Thank you so much for helping me out.”
