Julian spoke flatly, “The T Company is nowhere near qualified to strike deals with the Beaumont Group. Still, I’m curious what ties you have to them, and why you’re out here speaking for the firm. Give me a satisfying answer, and I’ll stay through this meal. If not, I’ll leave right away.”
Nina found him far harder to persuade than she had expected, though it was only to be expected.
She dropped her smile and got straight to the point. “You must know about the urban construction project The T Company is running now.”
“I’ve heard of it. It’s a project doomed to run at a loss.”
He poured himself a glass of red wine casually.
“It may seem unprofitable now,” Nina replied, “but if you invest one billion dollars into it, I guarantee you handsome returns in three years.”
“You sure aim high, throwing around such a huge sum so easily.” Julian frowned slightly. “That is no small amount. A newly listed company like The T Company simply cannot handle such a big project. One wrong move and they will face total ruin.”
“The T Company may not match your group’s scale right now, yet every project they’ve backed these past few years has turned out hugely successful. Investment always comes with risks, and this one carries far less danger than most others.”
“Your words make sense, but I still decline.”
He remained utterly unmoved.
“I admit I lied to you earlier and approached you on purpose,” Nina said sincerely. “I only did it to prove I have nothing going on with Jensen, and I have zero intention of ruining your sister’s engagement.”
“I already figured that out. That’s why I’ve sat here talking with you this long.” Julian looked indifferent. “To be honest, I’ve never fully approved of Audrey marrying Jensen. Still, she is my only sister. If this is what she wants, it’s my duty to clear every obstacle standing in her
way.”
He paused and fixed his gaze on her. “And you happen to be one of those obstacles.”

“One of the obstacles?” Nina frowned, feeling there was hidden meaning behind his words.
Julian ignored her question and went on, “Dishes here are always served within twenty minutes. You still have time to state your case. Once time runs out, this conversation ends for good.”
Nina stared at him. Gentle persuasion and reasonable talks had all failed. She decided to take a bold approach instead.
She leaned back against her chair. “You said you would get rid of all obstacles for your sister, didn’t you?”
“I did.”
“If you refuse to make this investment, starting tomorrow, I will stick closely to Jensen and won’t stop until he decides he wants no one but me.”
Julian choked on his red wine the second he heard that. He could hardly believe such blunt words had come from her mouth. He had never met any young lady in Halmont who acted so boldly.
His face darkened at once. “Do you have any idea what you’re saying?”
“I know exactly what I mean. It’s obvious Jensen has feelings for me, which is why Audrey sees me as her rival. If I set my mind on winning him over, your sister will lose this. engagement. Once she finds out it’s all because you turned down my request, she will surely hold a grudge against you.”
Her words struck right where it hurt most, leaving Julian furious enough to nearly lose his
temper.
“I’m actually easy to reach an agreement with,” Nina went on calmly. “Sign this deal with me, and I promise I will never cause trouble for your sister. But if you shut me out completely, I won’t hold back any longer.”
Deep down, she only claimed Jensen had feelings for her to gain more leverage over Julian.
