“There’s really no need to go through all this trouble. I…”

“I’ve got plenty of enemies around here. Even someone like Julian, who’s only on neutral terms with me, dared to lay hands on you. How can you be sure no one else will try the same thing?” Jensen said seriously. “Halmont is far less safe than you think. Everyone knows your family did me a huge favor, and they’ll target you to get to me. Staying here at my place is the safest choice for you.”

“I get it.”

“Also, whatever deals you made with Julian end right here,” he spoke firmly. “I can provide all the funds you need. If you still want to cut all ties and stay apart for good, I’ll agree to that too. Once I’ve helped you out this time, we can go our separate ways and never cross paths again.”

He finished speaking and opened the car door for her.

A twinge of guilt welled up inside Nina for no reason.

Neither of them said a word during the drive.

The car finally pulled up outside the Grey family’s villa.

“Get out,” he uttered flatly.

Nina unfastened her seatbelt and stepped out. Jensen drove the car straight into the with a blank expression, leaving her standing alone at the front gate.

After a while, he walked out from the garage and glanced at her. “Do I have to invite you in?”

All of Nina’s belongings had already been moved over.

She had always heard the Grey family’s residence was extremely lavish and grand, yet this place was nothing like that. It was just a modest 3,200-square-foot villa with simple understated decor. The whole space looked plain and neat, styled mainly in black and white tones, and there was not a single maid in sight.

“This isn’t your family’s main mansion, is it?”

“No, it isn’t.”

Nina instantly understood. The Greys would never let any woman other than Audrey stay in

their official family residence.

“Head upstairs. Your things are on the second floor.”

“Alright.”

Upstairs, the layout felt oddly familiar. She walked over to the first door on the left out of old habit and pushed it open. She froze on the spot-the room was decorated exactly the same way as her bedroom back home, with all furnishings placed in identical positions, and her suitcases sat right inside. For a moment, she felt as if she had returned to her own house.

Seeing Jensen hadn’t come up yet, she wandered over to the opposite room almost instinctively and pushed the door open. This room looked just like the one he used to stay in at her family’s home, spotlessly clean and fully lived-in, not empty at all.

Confusion washed over her. She could not figure out why he had arranged everything like this.

“Who taught you to walk into other people’s rooms without permission?”

Jensen’s voice came from beside her. She turned around and saw him holding a mug of

warm milk.

Old memories flooded her mind instantly. Back in high school, she had been trying to lose weight and often felt hungry late at night. He would always warm up skim milk and bring it straight to her room. When her legs ached badly from too much exercise, he would gently massage them for her. Those warm moments felt like they happened just yesterday, yet so many years had already slipped away.

“I…”

“This is milk I made for myself. Help yourself if you want some.”

He then turned and headed back into his own room.

Nina had no choice but to walk back downstairs alone. She opened the fridge and saw only a small amount of fresh vegetables, mostly frozen ready meals and piles of coffee packs. The kitchen was kept perfectly tidy, yet cup noodles were placed casually in the corner.

Has he been living on such simple plain food all these years by himself?

“I’m hungry!” Nina called out toward the upper floor.

The scene instantly took her back to their high school days. She would sneak quietly into his room in the middle of the night and whisper that she was hungry. She was already used to

going hungry while dieting back then. She only went to find him because she noticed he always ate very little, seemingly too reserved to eat properly while staying at her home.
