Nina could not believe Jensen had actually taken her random words seriously. She cleared her throat and spoke softly.

“I only said that out of sheer anger. I had no proper harsh words to fight back with. You know perfectly well the Tann family can never match up to the Beaumonts, and I was no match for her sharp tongue back then.”

“So you just blurted out those empty threats on a whim,” Jensen remarked. “Have you ever thought what would happen if nothing bad befell their family? Those words of yours will only end up making you look ridiculous later on.”

“But I still have you to back me up,” Nina said with a playful grin.

“Now that you’ve broken off the engagement with Audrey and fallen out with the entire Beaumont family, we’re practically in the same boat. We’ve known each other for years, so who else is there for me to rely on if not you?”

“I thought you were still upset with me.”

“Upset? When was that?” Nina pretended to know nothing at all.

She had indeed felt furious when he cut off all contact for six whole years straight. Yet all her anger faded away the moment he showed up at her birthday party. Later on, she felt upset again upon learning about his engagement to Audrey, so she had kept her distance from him

on purpose.

Now that she knew everything was just a misunderstanding and cherished their old bond deeply, she was unwilling to let this precious friendship slip away. Especially after she learned how harsh his days had been within the Grey family all those years.

“You know very well yourself how you felt back then.”

Jensen reached out and tapped her lightly on the forehead, just like he used to do back in their high school days. He always did this whenever she acted silly, hoping she would learn her lesson sooner or later.

Nina rubbed her sore forehead and looked straight at him.

“My heart aches knowing how badly you were treated in your own family, but that is still no excuse for cutting me off for six whole years! I once truly thought we were close best friends and reliable partners. You suddenly ended everything without a single word. Don’t you think you owe me some emotional compensation?”

Jensen’s tone turned calm and plain once more. “I kept my distance all those years because I feared people from the Grey family would come after your family. I know you have every right to be mad at me, and I’ll accept any punishment you want to give me.”

“Really?”

“I mean every word.”

“Great!”

Nina grabbed a marker pen lying on the desk right away. Jensen subconsciously took a step back the instant he saw what she held in her hand.

“Come over here,” Nina ordered in a serious tone.

Though he felt utterly reluctant, Jensen still walked slowly toward her.

Nina uncapped the marker and spoke firmly, “Close your eyes.”

“Nina, how old are you exactly?” Jensen sighed helplessly, yet he still obeyed and shut his eyes tightly.

“You promised to take any punishment I dish out, so stop questioning my age,” Nina retorted as she began drawing casually on his face.

Before long, she drew an extra third eye on his forehead, and stretched the corners of his mouth wide to turn his calm expression into a big goofy grin.
