Sure enough, as soon as Katrina said it, Chase’s expression hardened. He looked at them with open disdain. “Nina, I didn’t invite you. Who said you could come?”

Nina didn’t seem bothered. “Mrs. Mercer invited me. Why don’t you ask her yourself?”

“My mom?”

Cecilia hadn’t told him anything about inviting Nina.

“Nina, you’re like gum stuck to a shoe. Mrs. Mercer was just being polite–what makes you think someone like you belongs at Chase’s party? If you ask me, you should take that bastard with you and get lost.”

Tara’s words were sharp and vicious. Nina’s expression turned cold in an instant.

“Say that again.”

Tara let out a sneer. “So what if I do? Jensen’s nothing but an illegitimate child–a bastard.”

Smack-!

Nina’s hand came down hard. The force of it left Tara’s carefully made–up face instantly swollen on one side.

“Nina! You actually hit me?”

“Looks like you still haven’t learned your lesson. Fine–I’ll keep going until you do.”

Another slap. This time, the other side of Tara’s face flushed red and puffed up.

Katrina hurried forward. “Nina! It’s Chase’s birthday–you can’t just go around hitting people!”

Tara ducked behind Katrina, already crying, while a crowd began to gather.

Katrina had no intention of calming things down. If anything, she wanted Nina to make a bigger scene and embarrass herself in front of everyone. Raising her voice, she said, “Acting out at school is one thing, but do you even know what day this is? Mrs. Mercer invited you here -was it so you could come and cause trouble?”

She carried herself as if she were already the lady of the Mercer family.

“Katrina! Stop wasting time–just kick her and Jensen out!” Tara shouted hysterically from the

entrance.

Just as Katrina found the perfect excuse to throw Nina out, Nina spoke first.

“If it weren’t for Mrs. Mercer inviting me, I wouldn’t be here. Since the Mercer family clearly doesn’t welcome Jensen or me, we’ll leave right now.”

With that, she turned to pull Jensen away.

Before Tara and Katrina could even react, someone came hurrying out from inside–it was Harrison Brooks, the manager of The Grand Sovereign. He quickly caught up to Nina.

“Ms. Tann, please wait! Mrs. Mercer has been expecting you.”

His tone was respectful–almost deferential–and Katrina’s expression immediately darkened.

Tara bristled as well.

Weren’t Katrina and Chase supposed to be the stars of tonight?

What was Chase’s mother thinking?

Nina turned back, glanced at Tara, who was grinding her teeth, and said deliberately, “Doesn’t seem like the Mercer family wants us here. So should we go in… or not?”

“Of course you should! Ms. Tann, Mr. Mercer–this way, please.”

Harrison knew exactly who Nina was, and Mrs. Mercer had specifically asked for her. If Nina walked away now, he’d have no way to explain it.

“Since it’s Mrs. Mercer’s invitation, I’ll give her that courtesy. Jensen, let’s go.”

“Okay.”

Jensen stayed by Nina’s side the whole time, like a silent guardian. Whatever she chose to do, he would stand with her.
