On the day of the birthday banquet, Nina changed into a black evening gown and made a point of wearing the necklace Jensen had given her. Early that morning, Esther had already prepared a custom–made suit for Jensen, though she hadn’t shown it to him in advance–she was worried he might refuse it.
“Jensen, I’m not comfortable with Nina going alone. Go with her. With Nina around, no one will dare bully you.”
As she spoke, Esther handed him the suit with a smile. “Go try it on–it’s tailored just for you. I’m sure you’ll look great.”
Jensen hesitated for a moment, then accepted it. “Thank you, Mrs. Tann,” he said quietly.
“Go on. Let me see how handsome you look.”
Jensen glanced at Nina and saw the anticipation on her face. Only then did he head upstairs.
A short while later, he came back down.
He was taller than most boys his age, with a solid build. The suit fit him perfectly, giving him an air of quiet elegance. Every movement carried a natural sense of poise, and his face–sharp and sculpted like it had been carved from ice–was striking. His long, deep–set eyes seemed almost hypnotic.
For a moment, Nina just stared.
“Very handsome,” Esther said with a smile. “I wonder who you take after.”
That kind of noble presence wasn’t something just anyone could have.
Nina remembered how, after Jensen returned to the Grey family, he had acted decisively and without hesitation. The Grey family had built their wealth over generations–his father had created a business empire, and his mother came from a long line of aristocracy. With that kind of background, even the years he’d spent as an overlooked outsider in the Mercer family couldn’t dim what he was.
“Does it fit?” Jensen asked her.
Nina nodded eagerly. “It fits perfectly! And you look amazing.”
“Good.”

He turned to Esther. “Thank you, Mrs. Tann. When I start earning money, I’ll pay you back.”
“Oh, you silly child. There’s no need for that–we’re family. No need to be so formal.”
“No. I’ll definitely repay you.”
He sounded firm enough that Esther simply laughed it off as youthful stubbornness. “Alright, alright. We’ll do it your way–after you graduate from college.”
With that, she had the driver take Nina and Jensen together to The Grand Sovereign.
In the car, Jensen said, “I thought you wouldn’t want to go.”
“Why not? A free meal’s a free meal,” Nina replied with a grin. She was already looking forward to the drama that was bound to unfold tonight.
Outside The Grand Sovereign, several luxury cars were parked in a neat row, impossible to
miss.
By the time Nina and Jensen arrived, most of the guests were already there. Nina recognized at a glance that all the cars belonged to the Mercer family.
Cecilia had clearly gone all out for Chase this time, even sending multiple cars to pick up his friends. She must have been convinced Chase had gotten involved with the Sawyer family’s daughter and wanted everyone to know. It was also a chance to attract more investment to the Mercer family.
Too bad Katrina wasn’t a Sawyer heiress at all.
This time, Cecilia was setting herself up for a fall.
Just then, a Porsche pulled up in front of Nina and Jensen.
Chase stepped out from the passenger seat and thoughtfully opened the door for Katrina.
Dressed in a white gown, Katrina looked even more delicate than usual. With her naturally pure features, she seemed almost like an angel who’d wandered into the mortal world.
Tara, who had been sitting beside Katrina, got out as well and followed closely at her side like a shadow. She shot Nina a provocative look. “Sorry–we got here first.”
