Nina just smiled faintly. “It’s nothing. I had my secretary, Arthur, go collect the debt from the Mercers today.”
“Collect the debt?” Marvin and Esther exchanged a look, still not following.
“The money they owe us,” Nina said. “The loan’s overdue, so I had Preston go after it. The moment we pressed them, they showed up here. It’s obvious they’re after the Tann family’s money. Mom, Dad, it just proves they don’t have good intentions. We should cut ties with them completely.”
Marvin nodded. “Nina’s right. From now on, the Mercer family isn’t welcome here. Once they repay what they owe, we’ll have nothing to do with them ever again.”
Esther shook her head. “They’re seniors this year. I used to think Chase had a bright future, but now… living with his girlfriend at this stage? Doesn’t he care about his SATs at all?”
Once, she’d thought highly of him–good looks, strong grades. Now she couldn’t bring herself to like him at
all.
Nina said calmly, “Chase and Katrina have both been placed in Class C. I’ve seen their grades- they’re not getting into any good universities. You wouldn’t want your daughter marrying someone who’s given up on himself, would you?”
“Of course not,” Esther said, patting Nina’s hand. Then she hesitated. “It’s just… You used to like Chase so much.”
“That was before. Right now, the most important thing for me is studies.”
Hearing that, Marvin and Esther both nodded, relieved.
Their daughter had grown more beautiful–and more confident too.

By noon the next day, every asset under the Mercer family name was up for auction. Many of the attendees were former business partners of Mercer Group.
Not long ago, they’d been the ones trying to win the Mercers‘ favor. Now they finally had the chance to look down on them.
As Cecilia watched the bidders file in one by one, it felt like her heart was being carved out. She was so overwhelmed she nearly fainted. If Chase hadn’t been there beside her, she wouldn’t have been able to hold herself together.

“This place looks pretty old.”

“The location’s decent, I guess. It’s big. Other than that, nothing special.”
“With the Mercer family in this state, who knows if buying it will bring bad luck?”

The crowd laughed openly, their mockery impossible to miss.
In the past, these same people would have bent over backward to curry favor with the Mercers. They never would’ve dared speak like this.
Cecilia and Chase tightened their grip on each other’s hands, trying to steady themselves. Just then, Nina and Preston walked in.
The moment Nina appeared, all eyes turned to her.
She was strikingly beautiful, and there was a refined elegance about her that felt beyond her
years.
People immediately began whispering, asking whose daughter she was.
“Nina? What is she doing here?”
Cecilia’s expression darkened. Nina hadn’t shown them an ounce of respect the night before.
Was she here now just to watch them fall apart?
Chase stepped forward, frowning. “Nina! What are you doing here?”
“Everyone here is bidding at the auction. I’m here for the same reason.”
Chase froze. “What did you say?”
Nina didn’t bother answering him. She casually found a seat and sat down.
“Nina, you had people come here to auction off my family’s property, and now you’re here bidding on yourself. What exactly are you trying to do?”
“Nothing much. My dad said I’m coming of age, so he wants to give me a villa. I figured something ready–made would be perfect, so I’m planning to buy this one. In the end, it’s practically like not spending any money at all.”
A faint smile played on Nina’s lips. She was clearly doing it on purpose.

Cecilia nearly blacked out when she heard that.
How had she never realized this girl could be so calculating?

Soon, the auction began. Most people weren’t genuinely interested in the Mercer family’s properties–they were just there to watch the spectacle. When it came time to bid, Nina had an easy run of it. More than once, she secured Mercer–owned cars and jewelry at surprisingly low prices.
