“It’s because my son has finally come to his senses! He wants to marry Nina–he really likes her!”

As she spoke, Cecilia pulled Chase forward.

Though reluctant, Chase couldn’t help but stare at Nina in her casual home clothes. For a moment, he was completely captivated.

He’d never realized before just how beautiful she was.

“Chase, go on–tell them,” Cecilia urged, nudging him.

But Chase said nothing.

Nina looked at Cecilia and said plainly, “Mrs. Mercer, you didn’t bring Chase here just because the Tanns came knocking to collect a debt, did you?”

Her bluntness caught Cecilia off guard, leaving her momentarily awkward.

“Well…”

Nina gave a small smile. “I’ve heard Chase is already living with his girlfriend. Pushing him to walk away from her like this doesn’t seem right, does it?”

“What? He’s living with someone?” Esther slammed her hand on the table and shot to her feet. “He has a girlfriend–he’s even living with her–and he still comes here for my daughter? What is he thinking?”

Her expression darkened instantly.

Marvin reached out to steady her, then stood up himself, keeping his tone controlled. “If Chase already has someone he cares about, then there’s no reason for him to keep bothering Nina. My daughter isn’t desperate to marry. You should leave now. Don’t make me have you escorted out.”

Cecilia’s smile tightened, but she forced herself to keep it in place. “Chase is just young foolish. He was led astray by that girl. He’s already told me he’ll cut her off and won’t make the same mistake again.”

As she spoke, she kept shooting Chase pointed looks.

Under the pressure, he gave a stiff nod.

Nina’s expression didn’t change. “I’m not interested in something that’s already been used. And his grades have dropped to Class C. I’m planning to study abroad–I don’t want any ties to him. Mom, Dad, let’s just forget it.”

“Did you hear my daughter? Get out!” Esther snapped.

She called for security, and within moments, the guards entered the house.

Cecilia shoved Chase forward. “Go on! Say it! What are you waiting for?”

Left with no choice, Chase stepped up. “Nina… I can marry you. Please, just let my family off.”

Nina raised an eyebrow.

That might have been the lowest she’d ever seen him stoop.

If the Mercer family fell, Chase, as the heir, would go down with it.

She stepped closer, her voice light. “But what am I supposed to do? I don’t like you. Why do you keep acting like I’m forcing you to marry me? Do I look that desperate?”

Humiliation surged through Chase, but he swallowed it. In this situation, he didn’t dare push back.

Seeing him like this, Nina’s lips curved into a faint, amused smile.

Chase looked at Nina, his voice tight. “What do you want from me? What will it take for you to let the Mercer family go?”

Nina stepped closer, lowering her voice so only he could hear. “Nothing you do will change my mind.”

With that, she turned and walked back to Marvin and Esther, then said to the guards, “Take them out.”
