Katrina burst into tears, her face pale and trembling. Chase immediately stepped in, pulling

her behind him.

“Mom, this is where Katrina and I live. She’s my girlfriend. I want you two to get along from now on.”

Katrina blinked in shock. “What do you mean, ‘from now on‘?”

Was Cecilia planning to stay here?

Chase hadn’t told her about the auction–he hadn’t wanted to worry her–but now he had no choice. He pulled her aside and said quietly, “Our house was auctioned off this morning.”

“What?” Katrina stared at him, stunned.

Chase went on, “It’s all because of Nina stirring things up. But don’t worry–I’ll find a way to get the Mercer family’s property back.”

Katrina’s expression darkened.

So did that mean Cecilia would be staying with them in the meantime?

Cecilia walked in and sat down on the couch, dabbing at her tears. Then she glanced at the empty dining table and shot Katrina an irritated look.

“What are you standing around for? It’s already this late, and there’s not a single dish on the table. Are you waiting for Chase to cook for you?”

Facing her future mother–in–law, Katrina quickly stepped forward. “I’m sorry, that’s my fault. I’ll make dinner right away.”

She put on a meek, obedient front, but Cecilia didn’t soften in the slightest.

In her eyes, if it weren’t for Katrina meddling, Chase would already be with Nina.

Katrina swallowed her resentment. After all, the Mercer family was still wealthy by any standard–a fallen giant was still stronger than most.

Who knew? They might recover in a few days.

Besides, she was living comfortably here, in a spacious apartment with luxury cars at her disposal. If she left Chase now, she’d be left with nothing.

The next day, news of the Mercer family’s bankruptcy spread quickly through the papers.

When their classmates saw the headline, they could hardly believe it. Just a few days ago, Chase had insisted his family would never go under. The turnaround was almost instant.

Around that time, a group of students from Class A rushed in from the hallway, buzzing with excitement.

“Did you guys see the notice board outside? Chase and Katrina were caught secretly kissing in the school field! I heard they even went up to the rooftop at noon to… You know.”

They spoke with such vivid detail that it sounded like they’d witnessed it themselves.

Pinned to the board was a report letter, accusing Chase and Katrina of having an inappropriate relationship on campus.

Before long, Bruce summoned both of them to his office.

With a sharp smack, he slapped two exam papers down on the desk. “Do you know what these are? Your mock exam results for this month!”

“Chase–especially you. Take a good look at yourself. With grades like this, forget a top university–you’ll be lucky to graduate at all. If you don’t want to study, then just drop out!”

He turned to Katrina, his voice cold. “And you, Katrina–do you have any sense of self–respect? I was embarrassed just looking at those photos for you.”

Katrina glanced at the papers, but by now, she barely cared. Her grades had plummeted, and her lie about being the Sawyer family’s daughter had already been exposed. This was just one more humiliation on top of everything else.

But for Chase, this was the first time he’d ever been scolded so harshly by a teacher.

Once the pride of his class, he felt as if his dignity had been ground into the dirt.

The next second, he snatched the papers back and walked out without a word.

Nina had expected their grades to fall.

When the mock exam results came out today, she’d deliberately posted those photos on the notice board. She knew it would infuriate the teachers–maybe even push things far enough that the two of them could be expelled.
