Chapter 114

– ÁTILA

I was sitting on the edge of the bed, leaning forward, my eyes locked on her face, waiting.

Then she blinked.

Once.

Slowly.

Her eyes took a moment to focus, like they were relearning how to exist in this world. Then she tried to move, her muscles weak, her body refusing to obey her completely.

I reacted immediately.

I slid a hand behind her back, supporting her weight.

“Easy,” I murmured, leaning closer. “Go slow.”

She took a shaky breath, her dry lips parting with effort.

“Water… please…” Her voice came out hoarse, almost unrecognizable. “I’m thirsty.”

Before I could move, Miss Langford was already at the bedside table. She picked up the glass, filled it with fresh water, and stepped closer.

“Here,” she said gently, guiding the glass to Maya’s lips. “Drink.”

Maya held the glass with trembling hands and drank. She didn’t stop until it was completely empty. When she finished, she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and let out a soft breath.

Then she looked at me.

Straight into my eyes.

Without saying a word.

Every sentence I had rehearsed for days vanished. All that remained was silence and waiting. I needed to know. I needed to understand what she saw when she looked at me.

Her brow furrowed slightly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

The air grew heavier between us.

My voice came out lower than I intended. “You remember everything?”

Her expression hardened.

Shit. She did.

“I’m sorry,” I started. “I couldn’t tell you-”

She didn’t let me finish.

Her body surged forward, her arms wrapping around my neck as her lips crashed into mine with a desperation that completely disarmed me.

For a second, I froze.

I didn’t want to hurt her. She was still too fragile, still too weak.

But then her tongue slid into my mouth, warm, urgent, alive. The world disappeared. My arms wrapped around her waist on instinct, pulling her closer, feeling the heat of her body against mine.

She locked her legs around my waist, deepening the kiss, and something primal inside me snapped awake. I kissed her back with the same hunger, the same need, like I was coming back to life with her.

A soft clearing of a throat echoed through the room.

I stopped immediately.

I pulled back just enough to rest my forehead against hers, still feeling her breath against my lips.

“We’re not alone,” I whispered.

She blinked, still dazed, and glanced to the side.

Her eyes landed on Victoria.

“What is she doing here?” she asked, her voice still rough, but clearly bothered.

“She helped us,” I said calmly. “She did more for you than you know while you were asleep. Please don’t misunderstand her.”

Maya looked at me for another second, then slowly slid off my lap, her legs still unsteady.

Her stomach growled loudly, and her cheeks flushed instantly.

“Can I… eat something?” she asked, embarrassed.

Miss Langford smiled, restrained but genuine.

“I’ll prepare a proper feast immediately,” she said. “We must celebrate your return, child.”

Maya smiled back, a quiet, knowing smile, and nodded.

Victoria let out a soft laugh.

“I think I’ll help,” she said. “I wouldn’t want to interrupt the couple.” Her tone was thick with sarcasm.

They both left.

The door closed.

Silence returned.

I looked at Maya.

She looked at me.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

“You remember,” I said finally.

She nodded slowly.

“I remember everything.”

My breath caught.

“I remember the fire,” she continued. “I remember the heat. The pain. I remember not being able to breathe.” Her voice trembled slightly. “I remember them leaving me there. Alone. To die in that basement.”

I moved closer.

“You don’t have to force yourself-”

“No,” she said immediately. “I’m fine.”

“You almost died.”

She ignored that.

“After that,” she continued, “I woke up in another life. With Beatrice. Everything felt… peaceful enough that my mind didn’t question the hole in my memories.”

She looked straight at me.

“God… how did I forget? What happened that day? How did I get out of that basement?”

I took a slow breath.

“After the fire,” I said carefully, “your heart stopped.”

She went completely still..

“I called the mage from Hollow Creek.”

She frowned.

“Wilfred?”

“Yes.”

A brief silence passed before I continued.

“I made a pact,”

“A pact?”

“It’s a long story.”

“Then start telling it, Atila,” she said, impatience sharpening her voice.

I closed my eyes for a second, rubbing my temple.

“When I found you, you were already gone. And when Wilfred arrived… he told me there was a way. But there was a price.”

She said nothing.

gave up my nature,” I continued. “Ten years. In exchange for your life.”

Her hand flew to her mouth.

“Oh my God…. Átila… you didn’t… and Moonville? You’re the Supreme Alpha… how is that even possible?”

“That doesn’t matter right now.”

She fell into thought, and I watched her carefully.

“It makes sense now,” she whispered. “That’s why I didn’t question anything when we met again. That’s why… you felt different.”

I nodded.

“You’re…” she hesitated.

“Human.” I finished.

Another long silence settled between us.

“You’re not angry with me?” I asked.

She looked at me like the question itself was ridiculous.
