Chapter 116

MAYA

“Even if I can die, it doesn’t mean I will die.”

“Are you serious?” I asked, incredulous.

He didn’t look away.

“I am.”

That irritated me.

Before I realized it, I hit his shoulder with my hand. Not hard enough to hurt him, but enough to show exactly how angry I

was.

He let out a small grunt.

“Hey. That hurts.”

I crossed my arms immediately.

“Oh, it hurts?” I shot back. “Good. That’s for saying something so stupid.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Stupid?”

“How can you be so careless with your own life?” I demanded, heat rising to my face. “How can you accept something like that from the Moon Goddess like it’s nothing?”

He was quiet for a second.

Then he answered, softer.

“You would have died if I hadn’t done anything.”

The words hit their mark.

My anger faltered.

My stomach chose that exact moment to growl loudly.

Traitor.

I flushed immediately.

I looked away.

“I’m hungry,” I muttered, changing the subject with absolutely no dignity. “Let me leave this room.”

He didn’t answer.

But he smiled.

I saw it.

“What?” I demanded, irritated. “What are you smiling at?”

He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he lifted his hand to my face and gently pinched my nose between his fingers.

“You’re cute when you’re grumpy.”

My heart skipped a beat.

His smile was devastating..

I cleared my throat and looked away.

“Don’t talk to me,” I murmured. “I’m still mad at you.”

He let out a quiet laugh.

Then he stepped closer.

His arms wrapped around me carefully, pulling me against him with an ease that stole my breath. His warmth surrounded me instantly, and my body responded without permission, relaxing against his chest.

“Don’t worry about me,” he murmured near my ear.

I closed my eyes.

“How am I supposed not to?” I whispered.

He tightened his arms around me.

“If you went back in time a thousand times,” he continued, “I’d make the same choice a thousand times.”

My chest tightened.

“I couldn’t bear to lose you in this life, Maya.”

Something warm slid down my face.

A tear.

I hadn’t realized when I started crying.

But I was crying now.

My arms wrapped around him tightly.

“I love you,” I whispered against his chest.

He didn’t hesitate.

“I love you more.”

After a few hours of making up for lost time, Atila had to leave quickly to deal with something, and I stayed in the room, resting. A soft knock on the door broke the silence.

“Miss Maya,” Miss Langford’s polite voice said from the other side. “You have a visitor.”

“Come in.”

The door opened.

And my heart nearly stopped.

Beatrice stood there.

Holding a bouquet of flowers.

Her eyes were glassy with tears.

For a second, neither of us moved.

Then I opened my arms.

She crossed the room in seconds.

We hugged tightly, like two emotional sisters. I felt her body trembling against mine, and realized I was trembling too.

“You woke up,” she whispered.

“I did,” I replied.

She pulled back just enough to look at my face.

“Átila said you remember everything,” she said carefully. “Is that true?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

She hesitated, then started talking too fast.

“I just wanted to say… all this time, I didn’t tell you anything because we were worried about you. We were afraid—”

“Bee,” I interrupted gently. “Don’t worry.”

She stopped.

“I know everything.”

She blinked.

“In fact, I’ve studied it,” I continued. “I understand exactly why you didn’t tell me. It was the right choice.”

I squeezed her hand.

“Thank you for that.”

She let out a shaky breath.

“So everything’s okay.”

I smiled.

“It is.”

She squeezed my hand back.

“This feels like a dream.”

Chapter 116

We were still talking, still absorbing everything, when the door opened again.

Victoria walked in.

Holding a tray.

“I brought the patient’s meal,” she said.

Beatrice immediately turned her head, watching her closely.

Victoria placed the tray beside my bed.

Beatrice narrowed her eyes.

“I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before.”
