I was leaning against the hallway wall when I saw Miss Langford grep out of Maya’s room She closed the door with excessive care, as if even the smallest sound might shatter something too fragile to risk. When she turned. I pushed away from the wall, slid my hands out of my pockets and spoke before I had time to think
“So how is she?”
Langford drew a deep breath before answering Exhaustion was etched plainly across her face
“She fell asleep. I gave her a calming tea with gray silenia root. It should help keep her steady for the first few hours.”
Air finally reached my lungs I nodded, the tight weight in my chest easing-just a little. But she wasn’t finished.
“You do understand that once this reaches its peak. no herb will be able to hold her back, don’t you?”
By then, I’ll have decided what to do.”
She fixed me with a firm. unyielding look.
Then you’d better start deciding, Alpha Atila. In two days, that girl will be impossible to manage.”
I pressed my lips together as an inconvenient image tried to form in my mind. I shoved it away, hard.
“Do you know where my mother disappeared to?”
“Probably on the other side of the portal,” she replied with a tired half-smile. “Traveling. Enjoying life like an ordinary human Luxury, parties, glamour. She’s always liked that.”
Langford was right. My mother loved to talk about duty, tradition, and responsibility when it suited her but she never stayed to bear their weight. She preferred the other world: glittering halls, designer boutiques, expensive dresses, a mundane life drenched in luxury and excess. And yet I needed her now. I needed her experience. I needed her voice telling me what to do when my instincts screamed one thing and my reason another-so violently it was unlike anything I’d ever faced.
If I wanted to speak to her. I’d have to cross the portal and make a call.
My gaze drifted back to Maya’s door.
I didn’t want to leave her alone. Not out of stubbornness. Out of fear. Real fear. Fear she’d wake up disoriented, stumble out of that room with her body burning, and fall down the stairs. Fear she’d panic, lock herself somewhere, hurt herself trying to put out the fire the wrong way. Fear she’d open a window, feel the forest wind, and decide she needed to run.
And the ugliest fear of all.
That some unsuspecting wolf might catch her scent.
My hand clenched, the motion heavy and automatic..
“No.” I murmured, only then realizing I’d spoken aloud. “I will never allow that to happen under my watch.”
Langford studied me for a moment, and I didn’t like the quiet understanding that passed through her eyes. As if she knew exactly how much I was holding back.
“Excuse me, she said at last, softer now I think I’ll get some sleep, sin had more to drink with the bar crowd than 1 should have, and I’m exhausted

“Of course, Langford. You’ve earned your rest.
“I’ll come back in a few hours to check on Maya”

I nodded, and she disappeared down the corridor. I remained there for a moment longer, listening to the heavy silence of the house. Then, carefully I opened the bedroom door
Maya lay asleep on her side her head resting on one pillow, her arms wrapped tightly around another as if it were a shield. The low light traced her form beneath the sheets. I approached owly and sat on the edge of the bed.
She looked peaceful Serene. Her chest rose and fell in a calm rhythm, her pale skin holding that almost unreal tone-like porcelain warmed from within. A few loose strands of hair brushed her check. And her scent…
Sweet Dangerously sweet Mixed with something warmer, more alive-something that made my body react before my mind had any say in it.
Fuck
She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. Not just pretty. There was something about her that pulled, that called, that held you captive. She slept like an angel, as if she hadn’t nearly driven me to lose control minutes earlier.
I knew it wasn’t just the bond. She truly was beautiful. More than that-she was a living temptation, wrapped in the body of a small seemingly fragile woman. Any wolf would sense it from distance.
I lifted my hand, the impulse coming too fast. I almost touched er skin. Almost. I stopped midair, clenched my fist hard, and let it fall back to my side.
No, Not like this.
I settled for watching her, committing every detail to memory while calm still existed.
Because I knew—it had an expiration date.
The coming days would be hell for her. And for me. And it was my duty to keep her safe until the very last trace of that fire burned out of her body.
I don’t know when exhaustion finally claimed me. I only remember shifting farther back on the bed, resting my head, and closing my eyes.
When I woke, something soft brushed against my nose.
Warm.
Scented.
My body reacted before thought. I frowned, drawing in a sharp breath.
Hair?
I opened my eyes instantly.
Maya was curled against me, spooned perfectly into my body he arm draped across my chest, one leg sliding between mine The silver silk nightgown clung to every curve, slippery, tracing her narrow waist and leaving her ass partially bare The warm pressure of her body against mine made my stomach drop
I looked down.

The cleft of her ass was dangerously close to my cock, still trapped inside my pants My body had responded without asking permission
“Holy shit.
I jumped out of bed as if she were on fire The mattress dipped
she stirred-slow, lazy. Maya rose to her knees, stretching
with her arms lifted, her body arching softly, a near-feline sound shipping from her lips.
“Good morning, baby”
“What the hell happened here?” I asked, nearly stuttering.
