Chapter 22

ATILA

I frowned, irritation rising too fast to be contained

“What do you mean they want her back?”

Benetti remained rigid hands clasped neatly in front of him.

The Melroses are demanding the girl’s return. They claim she cannot live under the roof of an unmarried Alpha and must be sent back to the family estate immediately. They’re prepared to pursue their legal rights…”

I cut him off before he could finish.

I’ll take this to the Council today I’ll expose every illegal action that couple has committed over the past years.”

He cleared his throat, visibly uncomfortable.

“With all due respect. sir.. Maya is their daughter. By our laws, no matter how distasteful it may be, they still have the right to weigh in on her future”

My jaw tightened..

“Locking her away Erasing her from existence. Treating her like nothing while hiding who she truly was? Calling that a right is an insult.

Benetti opened his mouth, then hesitated. When he finally spoke his voice was quieter.

They will only speak to her if Maya agrees. She’s been of age for years now. She’s a grown woman. The decision is entirely hers. If she refuses, the meeting will take place only before the Council, on the day of judgment.”

He paused, then added carefully-almost fearfully.

“Perhaps perhaps you could at least ask her. Just that. I’m confident the answer would favor her parents.”

My instincts reacted before reason had a chance.

“She’s not in any condition to decide anything right now. Not in the next few days. Maybe I’ll ask her later.”

His eyes narrowed

“What happened to the girl?”

considered, briefly, whether I should reveal something that personal. I decided against it.

“Nothing. She’s simply adjusting to a new routine. I won’t allow their presence to disrupt the peace she’s only just begun to feel Perhaps at the end of the next fortnight”

Benetti nodded, defeated.

“Very well

“But make it clear the matter will go before the Council regardles. They’d better have an impeccable explanation for what they’ve done.”

He exhaled slowly.

1 followed him down the corridor with my eyes alone. Once he disappeared, I drew in a deep breath and stepped into my office I walked to the edge of the wide window overlooking the gardens, where a group of gammas trained beneath the night sky. The sound of blows, the sharp impact of bodies mn moon, the scent of earth and exertion filled the air. I breathed in again

Since Maya had crossed the threshold of my home, my routine ad been pushed aside. The training center demanded everything of a Supreme Alpha-discipline, presence, strength. nd yet, no matter how hard I tried to maintain order, my thoughts returned to her every damned waking second. Now, with the audacity of her parents, it hammered relentlessly in my mind.

A discreet knock sounded at the door

“Sir Volkov? May I come in?”

“You’re already here Enter”

The Omega who stepped inside carried the submissive posture drilled into her by Vincent’s family. She approached the desk and extended an elegant envelope, sealed with wax.

“What’s this?

“An invitation to the birthday celebration of the Ravenscroft patriarch. Alpha Lucien will be hosting a grand event at his residence here in Moonville. He requested that I deliver it personally and convey that your presence would be an honor.”

I studied the envelope for a moment. Social gatherings had never appealed to me, but leadership didn’t allow selective refusals.

“Tell Lucien I’ll attend”

Her smile appeared instantly, almost relieved.

“Thank you very much, sir. Excuse me.”

I nodded. Once the door closed, I set the invitation aside and immersed myself in the day’s duties.

The protection of Moonville had always been my family’s responsibility. Long before I became Alpha-before I even understood the weight of that title-we were the guardians of this territory. Maintaining order, strength, and readiness within the pack was never a choice. It was an inherited duty.

The training center never slept I coordinated shifts, corrected formations, supervised combat drills and endurance tests. I stepped into the ring the moment I sensed the gaminas growing roo comfortable. My presence alone altered the atmosphere Eyes sharpened. Bodies tensed. I faced two of them at once, neutralizing their attacks with controlled force and brutal precision. The impact of my blows drew restrained gasps from those watching. There was respect there. And something more. That power which had lain dormant for years was slowly beginning to return-still far from what it once was, but real enough to be felt.

When the day finally dragged to its end after ten long hours, I walked through the forest, letting the green silence absorb some of the accumulated tension. Only then did 1 return home.

The shower was long and cold. The water sliding over my skin helped organize thoughts that kept unraveling around the

same name.

I went down to dinner shortly after. The main table was set, assistants helping Langford with the final details.

“How is she?” I asked between bites.

Langford took a breath before answering
