Chapter 29
-ÁTILA
“So… I’ve stocked the fridge with everything we bought. Do you want me to cook for you now, or later?”
For all I cared, she could run the entire house if she wanted to. I leaned my hip against the kitchen counter, grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl, and took a bite before answering.
“You could spend the whole day doing absolutely nothing.”
She let out a short, almost nervous laugh and looked away, as if I’d suggested a crime.
“God forbid. What kind of person would I be if I did nothing all day in someone else’s house?”
I watched her closely-the way she kept herself busy even when there was no need to be. The answer slipped out before I thought better of it.
“You’d be my lady… and the future owner of this house.”
Her cheeks went up in flames. I almost smiled at that. Almost.
“You talk as if we have some kind of serious commitment.”
I took a step toward her, feeling the air shift between us. She instinctively stepped back, as if she knew exactly what would happen if she didn’t.
‘And we don’t? What could be more serious than the bond that’s tied us together since birth?”
She looked away before the heat could rise any further. Cleared her throat, crossed her arms, and retreated into the safe motion of someone who needed to keep her hands busy.
“Either way, I feel more useful when I’m doing something. Like when I cooked for you earlier today. I don’t like just standing around.”
“All right. Do whatever you want. The house is yours.”
She took a deep breath, as if giving herself permission to relax a little, then seemed to remember something.
“By the way, where is Miss Langford? I haven’t seen her since we got here.”\
I frowned.
“You’re right. I haven’t seen her either.”
We stood in silence for a few seconds. Me, openly watching her without shame. Her, clearly aware of my gaze.
“Anyway, I’ll stay here in the kitchen,” she said, already moving toward the stove.
“Perfect Make me something delicious. I’ll stay right here and watch,” I replied with a crooked smile, sitting on one of the stools behind the marble counter.
She crossed her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow at me.
“I thought you said you had something to do around the house.”

Chapter 29
“Did I?”
“Mm-hmm. So? Were you lying?”
I got up too fast, nearly tripping over myself. I scratched the back of my head, searching for a passable excuse.
“No. Of course not. I just… forgot. I’ll grab some tools and chop wood in the garden.”
“Oh. I sec. All right, then.”
She looked at me suspiciously. I pointed over my shoulder without taking my eyes off her.
“So I’m heading out.”
“Go on. Go.”
“If you need me, call.”
“Okay. I think I can manage on my own, but I’ll call if I need to.”
“Make sure you do.”
She tilted her head, amused.
‘You’re still here?”
I smiled, defeated.
‘All right. I’m going. See you later, beautiful.”

Her cheeks flushed again. She tried to pull herself together, slipping back into that firm posture she used like armor.
See you later, Alpha Átila.”
left the kitchen and headed down the hall-but stopped halfway.
Her voice echoed in my mind, far too clear to ignore: Did he just call me beautiful?! That’s ridiculous. He probably calls all of them that. Me and those two omegas I once saw in his bed.
What?
I turned back without thinking. The words came out like a shot.
‘Those omegas meant nothing to me.”
She spun around.
“What?”
“You’ve been thinking about that since the day we met. Drawing conclusions about something that happened when I didn’t even know you existed.” I took a deep breath. “Before you… every decade I spent alone, I grew weaker And I can’t afford weakness as the Alpha of this pack, Maya. So I sought vitality wherever I could. But none of them ever mattered to me”
She stared at me in silence, as if trying to reorganize her entire reality. When she spoke, her voice was low
“How do you know I thought that? I mean…. how can you be so sure what goes on in my head?”

Chapter 29
My jaw locked. There was no way out now.
“Because I can hear them.”
“What?”
“Your thoughts. They reach me without warning. Like a transmission.”
Shock turned into anger in seconds.
“That’s impossible.”
“Not for me.”
“So you’re saying you invade my mind whenever you want?”
“Not when I want. It just… happens. I can’t stop it.”
A storm of thoughts flooded her mind then, and she murmured, shaken,
“That’s a violation, Atila.”
“I know.”
“And you only decided to tell me now?”
“Because I didn’t know how.”
“Didn’t know-or didn’t want to?”
She was breathing fast, her eyes bright with indignation and something deeper, more vulnerable.
