Chapter 35
– ATILA
The Next Day
I was already dressed and ready when I stopped in front of Maya’s bedroom door.
I knocked twice and heard her muffled voice from inside, granting permission:
“Come in.”
I pushed the door open.

She was sitting at her vanity, brushing her hair with slow, unhurried strokes. She wore a white silk nightgown that skimmed her body as if it had been tailored for every curve. Her narrow waist was a silent invitation to temptation, and the way the silk molded to her perfectly lifted hips… flawless. Absolutely flawless.
I lingered a second longer than I should have.
she caught me in the mirror.
She glanced back over her shoulder, her eyes meeting mine with an almost provocative calm. I looked away at once, clearing ny throat, trying to salvage whatever dignity I had left.
Alpha Átila… do you need something?” she asked, her voice so sweet it was as if she were completely unaware of the crime “d just committed.
Actually, I just came to say goodbye,” I replied, far too serious. “I’m heading to the training center. I’ll be there for a while. oday.”
Oh… all right. Have a good day at work, then,” she said softly.
stayed there longer than necessary. Waiting. Waiting for a thought, a whisper from her mind slipping into mine the way it lways did. But nothing came. Since yesterday, her mind had been too quiet. Unnaturally quiet.
She frowned slightly.
What is it? Why are you looking at me like that?”
I wouldn’t sound good to admit I’d been trying to pry into her thoughts. So I simply said,
Nothing.”
I walked over to her. She remained seated, facing the vanity. I slid my hand around the back of her neck, feeling the warmth of her skin beneath my fingers, and leaned down to place a slow kiss on her forehead.
When I pulled back, our faces were only inches apart.
My gaze dropped to her parted lips. For a moment, the rest of the world vanished. The urge to kiss her hit hard-almost impossible to resist. But I couldn’t. I knew I wouldn’t be able to stop myself if we started that now.
So I stepped back.
She took a deep breath, as if she had to remind herself how to breathe, and I said,

“Behave yourself.”
“Same to you,” she replied, narrowing her eyes playfully, almost smiling.
“Okay.”
I nodded with a faint smile, took one last look at her, and left the room.
It was going to be a long day.

The Moonville training center was louder than usual when I arrived. Rushed footsteps, gammas moving back and forth, the smell of iron and sweat heavy in the air.
I headed straight for my office.
That’s when I saw them.
Three women stood at the entrance, as if they had been waiting for me. The other Melrose daughters wore expressions that mixed barely concealed desperation with something dangerously close to anticipation-predators watching their prey.
I frowned immediately.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, my tone sharp.
Elizabeth spoke first.
́Alpha Átila… we came to talk to you.”
“Did your mother send you?”
“No!” Freida answered too quickly, her cheeks flushing. “Actually, Mother doesn’t even know we came to Moonville. We
came on our own.”
Elizabeth added, almost pleading,
“Please… you owe us this conversation.”
I crossed my arms.
“What kind of conversation would I have with any of you?”
“You led us on!” Margot nearly shouted, loud enough to make a few gammas outside stop and stare.
I took a slow breath.
I looked at them, then at my office door. The look in their eyes told me they weren’t leaving without making a scene-and scenes were the last thing I tolerated in this place.
“Fine. Come in.”
I walked to the door. Elizabeth followed close behind and, before her sisters could enter, blocked the doorway
“One at a time,” she said firmly. “It’s better this way. Each of us gets a fair chance.”

Freida and Margot stared at her as if she’d just betrayed them. Elizabeth shut the door in their faces and turned to me with a timid smile.
I watched her without a hint of emotion.
She wore tight-fitting jeans and a rose-colored silk blouse-far too simple for someone clearly trying to impress. I sat behind my desk and gestured to one of the chairs in front of it.
“Sit.”
She obeyed, adjusting herself in the chair.
I leaned forward slightly.
“I don’t have much time. Be brief.”
Elizabeth tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
“Of course… well, my sisters and I were completely caught off guard by your visit to our parents’ house.”
“Caught off guard?”
“Yes. We never imagined that, out of all the options, you’d choose someone outside of them.”
“You’re right, Elizabeth. When I decided to visit the Melrose house, Maya wasn’t among the options to become my wife. Because she isn’t an option. She was always the one. I just didn’t know she existed.”
Her eyes widened.
“What do you mean you didn’t know she existed?”
“Your parents know the full story better than you do. Ask them to explain. I don’t have time for this now.”
“I… actually… I know the whole story.”
