She swallowed before she spoke, and the sugary perfume she wore mixed with old wood and lavender drifting from inside.

“Alpha Atila… it’s an honor to welcome you into our home. Please, come in.”

I didn’t answer. I simply stepped past her, hands clasped behind my back, letting my gaze move through the room with measured calm.

Wide sitting room. Fire crackling in the hearth. Everything staged to feel warm. Safe. Inviting.

And then I caught it.

A scent.

Too sweet. Too warm. Almost cloying.

It didn’t come from the flowers. Or the tea set on the table. It wasn’t ordinary perfume.

It came from somewhere in this house.

Somewhere it didn’t belong.

“Where are your parents?” I asked, still scanning the space.

Another daughter-dressed in red-sprang up from the sofa like she’d been launched.

“Our father is traveling,” she said, smile too bright, too tight. “And our mother is-”

“Our mother stepped away to handle something upstairs,” Elizabeth cut in quickly, slicing over her sister’s words before they could turn inconvenient, “But she’ll be right back. Would you like tea? Or maybe butter cookies… I made them myself.”

A girl in pink rolled her eyes so hard it almost made me smile.

Almost.

I looked back at Elizabeth.

“You made the cookies,” I repeated, one brow lifting.

“Yes.” She nodded, working too hard to look confident.

My gaze dropped to her hands. Clean nails. Perfect cuticles.

I tilted

my

head.

“I’m sure they’re flawless,” I said mildly. “Just like your hands. Not a speck of flour anywhere.”

Elizabeth.

I turned slightly toward the one in pink.

“Then I assume someone else did the baking.” I paused. “What’s your name?”

She stammered, color flooding her face.

‘F-Freida, sir. But… I didn’t make them. The maid did.”

Elizabeth’s control snapped.

‘Shut

up, you stupid fat idiot!”

Silence slammed into the room.

Even the fire seemed to quiet.

I looked at Elizabeth, genuinely surprised by the sudden ugliness-by how easily the mask slipped. This wasn’t how a “noble” family was supposed to behave in front of an Alpha.

Elizabeth realized it a beat too late. She straightened, forcing a strained smile.

‘My sister doesn’t know when to stop being… honest,” she said, voice trembling as she tried to stitch herself back together. “It was only a joke. Of course we know Maya does everything in this house. Excuse me, Alpha. I’ll get your tea.”

She hurried off, heels tapping on the floor, leaving embarrassment hanging in the air like smoke.

The two remaining sisters avoided my eyes. Langford stood where she was, quiet and unreadable, watching everything like she always did.

I sat on the sofa and drew a slow breath through my nose.

If one of these women was meant to be my Luna one day, I had to choose carefully. A mistake wouldn’t cost me a ring.

It would cost the balance of the entire pack.

“Sit,” I ordered.

They obeyed immediately.

Elizabeth returned with a silver tray and served the tea with controlled movements, pretending nothing had happened. Langford hovered like a shadow.

But my attention kept drifting.

Because the scent was still there.

Faint. Sweet. Unbearably familiar.

Omega.

“So, Alpha Átila,” Freida said, trying for casual and failing, “how are things in Moonville?”

“Moonville is fine.”

Margot leaned forward, her neckline doing far too much of the talking.

“I heard you went hunting a few days ago,” she said softly. “Did you catch many careless deer?”

“Two,” I said. “But they weren’t deer.”

Her lashes fluttered. “If they weren’t deer… what were they, then?”

Before I could answer, hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor.

Mrs. Melrose appeared in the doorway like she’d been holding her breath until the right second.

“Alpha Atila,” she said, voice polished, “what an honor to have you in our home.”

I stood.

“The pleasure is mine, Mrs. Melrose.” I paused just long enough to let the words settle. “I came to speak with your daughters. I believe it’s time we strengthened the ties between our families.”

Her smile wavered-nervous beneath the shine.

I believe a union between our families could benefit us greatly.”

“My mother believes the same.”

A cold current moved through the room.

And the scent surged-sharp enough to stop me mid-breath.

I went still.

“That smell,” I murmured. “It’s coming from you.”

Mrs. Melrose blinked, startled. “Oh-perhaps it’s my new perfume, Alpha. It was sent from Paris.”

“It’s not perfume.”

The growl slipped out before I could swallow it back.

Her eyes widened.

“There’s someone else in this house,” I said, voice low, absolute. “I want to meet the owner of that

scent.”

Her face drained of color.

“There’s no one here besides me and my daughters.”

“One of your daughters mentioned a maid.” My gaze pinned her. “Is she an omega?”

Mrs. Melrose hesitated-just long enough to be guilty.

“Yes,” she said carefully. “But she’s not exactly a maid. She’s… practically family—”

And then a voice cut into my mind like it had been there the whole time and I’d only just noticed it.

‘It’s always for my own good. Even when she locks me in the attic.’

My entire body went rigid.

The voice continued, clear as breath against my ear.

‘I bet if I die up here, she’ll still

here, she’ll still say it was my

it was my fault.’

I straightened so fast the movement turned sharp.
