Chapter 73

ÁTILA

“It wasn’t a lie.”

That was all I managed-simple. Direct.

Her reaction was instant. She blinked fast, pupils flaring wide.

“So… I really am your… fated mate?”

I took a step toward her.

The hardwood groaned under my weight-one sharp, hollow sound that seemed to echo through the entire room. Her slender body went rigid, but this time she didn’t retreat. Her heartbeat kicked up, frantic, and underneath the fear I felt something else.

Something that wasn’t fear at all.

My wolf caught it before I did.

I stopped close enough to see every detail of her face in the moonlight spilling through the window.

“You’re the woman I’ve waited decades for,” I said, my voice dropping lower than I meant it to. “The only one who could make me lose control… and I don’t lose control.”

She jerked back on instinct and bumped into the edge of the bed.

“This has to be a mistake,” she stammered. “How could someone like me be the Luna of a Supreme Alpha? I’m just an omega.”

“Those things aren’t chosen, Maya,” I said, holding her gaze. “And I’m guessing you know enough to understand that.”

‘He’s lying, her mind whispered, pure panic. ‘He can’t be serious. There has to be some other omega for him. Anyone else-someone prettier. Someone more interesting.

Her throat bobbed as she swallowed. Fear. Disbelief. And years of being made to feel small doing the rest.

I’d seen it before,

And I wouldn’t be seeing it for the last time.

I cleared my throat, breaking the tension I’d created.

“But don’t worry,” I added, adjusting my tone, sanding the edge off it. “Relax. I don’t bite… not when I’m in my ‘trying to be a civilized man’ era.”

The corner of my mouth almost lifted, but I stopped the smile before it fully formed. Humans tended to loosen up when you joked with them. Omegas with trauma didn’t work the same way.

Still-softness wouldn’t kill anyone.

I drew a slow breath and explained, clearer this time.

“What I mean is, I won’t do anything without your consent. In this house, you’re safe, Maya. And you don’t have to worry about what happens outside these walls. Out there, the world doesn’t get

in Moonville. Your mother has no power over you much

here.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, suspicion cutting through the fear.

“How do you know I’m worried about

my

mother?”

“It’s written all over your face,” I said, choosing the exit instead of the truth. I stepped back, giving her space. “Like I said, call Ms. Langford if you need anything.”

“I still have more questions…”

“How about you ask them later?” I replied, serious but not harsh. “I really need to go.”

The silence that followed was short-but long enough for another thought to slam into mind. Loud. Raw. Brutally honest.

‘Where is he going in such a hurry? Obviously to a brothel. Where else would a perverted Alpha like him go? He’s still lying that I’m his Luna. I wasn’t born yesterday!

I didn’t move. Didn’t blink.

Then I said, perfectly calm, “I’m meeting with a few members of the pack, Miss Maya. Please don’t get jealous.”

Her head snapped up.

“What?” she blurted, eyes going wide, “Why would you say I’m jealous? Are you insane? I barely know you. Why would I… be jealous?”

I had to swallow the laugh that threatened to break loose at the sight of her-flustered, defensive, and completely transparent.

And then another thought slipped out of her, quieter this time. Confused. But clear enough to reach me.

‘Can he read

my

mind?’

So I turned away.

Left her without an answer.

Right at the point where the mystery would start burning through her from the inside out.

I shut the door behind me and walked down the hall, trying to keep my expression neutral.

It was pointless.

My wolf was far too pleased with itself.
