MAYA

I was sitting on the bed, still wrapped in nothing but a towel, drying my hair with a smaller one. My skin was still warm from the shower, but I felt tired in a way that had nothing to do with sleep.

The door opened and Beatrice came in slowly, leaning on her crutch.

She shut the door and walked over to the bed.

I didn’t look up right away. I kept drying my hair, trying to breathe like everything was normal.

But I felt her silence.

When I finally lifted my head, Beatrice was staring at me.

Her eyes were locked on my neck.

On the mark.

She brought her hand to her mouth, shocked.

“Oh

my God… you were… you were…”

I swallowed and finished it for her, giving her an embarrassed little smile.

“Marked.”

Beatrice blinked like her brain was still catching up.

“When? Did you two have sex on the trip?”

I let out a short, awkward laugh and nodded.

“Yeah. On the way back. We stopped at a cabin in the middle of nowhere and we… did a lot.”

Beatrice’s eyes went wide and she raised her voice without even realizing it.

“THAT’S WHY YOU TOOK SO LONG!”

I laughed because I couldn’t help it.

She slapped her hand on her forehead, completely offended.

“Oh

my

God! And I was over here worried sick about you while you two were out there acting up!”

I smiled even harder.

Beatrice pointed at me, mad.

“What are you smiling at? This isn’t funny. Poor Cassian almost went back into the forest, but he didn’t only because his father asked him to take some last-minute trip.”

I stopped laughing immediately.

“Oh-right. I almost forgot… is Cassian okay?”

“He is,” Beatrice said, sitting carefully on the bed beside me because of her foot. “He just seemed annoyed because you went with Átila. Which brings me to my question… what’s going on with you

three?”

I frowned.

“Nothing is going on with the three of us. Cassian is just my

friend.”

Beatrice gave me that look like, Do you really think I’m stupid?

“You know that’s not what he wants to be, right? Just your

friend.”

I sighed.

“Beatrice… Cassian is Átila’s friend.”

“And?” she shot back. “Does that stop someone from liking someone? You don’t control feelings.”

I didn’t answer.

Because she was right.

But I didn’t want to open that conversation.

Beatrice dropped her gaze to my shoulder, and her face turned serious again.

“But… now you’re marked. So yeah. Everything is going to be different.”

My stomach tightened.

I thought about Átila.

The

way

he stayed close to me on the way back. The way he looked at me.

And the way I felt too.

It was almost physical. Like I needed to be near him.

I’d had to force myself not to go home with him. I’d had to stop myself from asking him to stay.

And now, standing there in that room, I already missed him like we’d been apart for a week.

Even though it had only been a few hours.

I took a breath, pretending it was nothing.

Beatrice smiled slowly, her tone turning playful.

“Okay then.” She pointed at my neck. “Let me get this straight. You’re officially the mate of the most powerful wolf in the pack now.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Beatrice…”

“No, no, no.” She cut me off. “That’s exactly what it is. You’re marked. That’s official. It’s basically a wolf signing his name on the female he chose.”

I let out a nervous laugh.

“Stop.”

“Maya, do you realize what this means?” she kept going, excited. “You can literally say ‘my Alpha’ to a Volkov and no one can say a damn thing.”

I hid

my face in the towel for a second.

“Oh my God.”

Beatrice laughed.

“And you’re still embarrassed. That’s ridiculous? She tilted her head, looking at the mark again. “It’s really dark. He wasn’t exactly gentle, was he?”

My face burned,

“I’m pretty sure my Alpha had a lot of… built-up tension.”

The second I said it, I wanted to disappear.

But Beatrice grinned, and I couldn’t help smiling too,

She lightly tapped my

knee.

“Okay. Tell me the truth. Are you happy?”

I swallowed.

Then I answered quietly.

“Yeah. I am. A lot.” I hesitated, then admitted it. “I just… feel him. Even when he’s not here.”

Beatrice’s expression softened.

“That’s the bond, Maya,” she said calmly.

I nodded slowly,

The room went quiet for a second.

Then Beatrice switched topics in the most blunt way possible.

“So… Wilfred,” she said. “Did he tell you what you wanted to know?”

My body went stiff instantly.

The good warmth I’d been feeling disappeared.

I looked down and squeezed the towel in

my

hands.

“He did.”

Beatrice leaned in, curious.

“And?”

I swallowed hard.

“He said… my father’s mistress… is inside my biological mother’s body.”

Beatrice froze.

Like I’d slapped her.

“What?”

I took a breath, but my throat was already tight.

“He said it. That woman… the mistress… has been using my mother’s body for years.”

Beatrice went pale.

“So…. your mother isn’t your mother.”

I couldn’t look at her.

“No.”

Beatrice brought her hand to her mouth again, but this wasn’t cute shock anymore.

It was pure rage.

“So she’s your stepmother,” Beatrice said, her voice shaking. “Holy shit… what a fucking bitch.”

My eyes

burned.

I didn’t want to cry.

But the tears came anyway.

Hot.

Heavy.

Because that sentence hurt too much.

I’d

spent my whole life thinking I had a mother who hated me,

But I didn’t.

I had a stranger in her place.

A woman who treated me like garbage, and she wasn’t even my mother.

And the worst part was… my father was part of it.

I rubbed my hair harder with the towel, trying to stay busy so I wouldn’t fall apart.

“I don’t understand how someone can do that,” Beatrice said, furious. “How a soul can just steal someone else’s body.”

She pressed her lips together, shaking her head.

“I want to go there and beat the hell out of both of them.

I stared at my lap.

“I’m not gonna lie… I’m really angry too,” I said quietly.

Beatrice took a deep breath, trying to calm down.

“Maya… this is so disgusting.”

I nodded, my eyes full.

“I know.”

We talked for a few more minutes until my breathing finally felt more normal again.

Then Beatrice yawned.
