Chapter 84

– ÁTILA

I sat at the center of the Council chamber, the weight of ancient wood pressing into the soles of my boots while the elders’ murmurs circled me. Their voices overlapped, collided-charged with something I had almost never witnessed in this room.

Uncertainty.

These men had spent their entire lives settling disputes, confirming leadership, reinforcing hierarchies. I had never seen them hesitate.

Until today.

“The problem,” one of them said, his voice tight with impatience, “is that we’ve never dealt with anything like this. Never.”

“If Atila Volkov is no longer the Supreme Alpha,” another countered, “then who is? Do we have to decide that now?”

Decide.

The word rang wrong. You don’t decide a Supreme Alpha. You either recognize one-or he doesn’t

exist at all.

I crossed my arms, keeping my expression neutral.

I already knew.

They didn’t.

A low, gravelly sound came from the far end of the chamber, from the oldest elder seated nearly in shadow. His body was bent with age, but his eyes were still sharp.

Alistair Crowe.

He rarely spoke. When he did, arguments ended.

“We recognize nothing here.”

Silence thickened the air.

“Throughout the entire history of our pack,” he continued, his voice steady despite the years, “the Volkov family has ruled. Their sons were always naturally recognized as Supreme Alphas. Never by decree. Never by choice. They simply… were.”

I swallowed, not moving a muscle.

“But now,” he went on, “when there is no one in that bloodline who qualifies, then a second man among us will be recognized-when the time is right.”

One of the elders leaned forward, restless.

“And what exactly does that mean?”

Crowe lifted his gaze slowly.

“It means we’ll know when we find him.”

“But who, besides a Volkov, could possibly be more qualified?” another pressed, desperation creeping into his voice. “We can’t wait ten years.”

Crowe opened his mouth to answer.

He didn’t get the chance.

The chamber doors swung open.

The sound cracked through the room like a strike of thunder. Firm footsteps crossed the stone floor. I didn’t need to turn to know who it was.

The air shifted.

The rhythm of the room changed.

Lucien Ravenscroft entered first. Tall. Silver-haired. Impeccably composed, carrying the dangerous calm of a man who had never needed to prove himself.

Vincent followed close behind his father. Younger. More restless. But there was something different in his stride.

I heard them stop at the center of the chamber.

Lucien cleared his throat.

“I assumed you’d all be gathered.”

I lifted my gaze, studying him carefully.

“This morning,” he continued, “I felt an energy surge through my body. Something… singular. I came to confirm whether something so rare truly happened to me-or if I’ve finally lost my mind.”

I looked around.

I don’t know if it was because the power no longer pulsed beneath my skin, or because I simply refused to deny what was inevitable.

One by one, the members of the Council stood.

Not by command.

By instinct.

They bowed their heads.

“My lord.”

What?

That was the moment I understood.

My place had already been taken.

I left the Council without looking back.

My footsteps echoed through the long corridor, faster than protocol allowed. The meeting was over, and all I wanted was to get home. I needed news of Maya.

The rest of the world could fall apart later.

“Boy, wait.”

The voice reached me just before the outer doors. I stopped and turned slowly, my hands tucked into

my coat pockets.

“Yes?”

It was Elias Thorn. One of the Council’s oldest and wisest.

He took a deep breath.

“I won’t circle around this. I want to know why you made such a drastic decision-and why you didn’t mention it in the meeting.”

I tilted

my head slightly,

“I believed I had the right to keep it private.”

He gave a tired half-smile,

“Don’t fool yourself. Moonville runs on rumors.”

“What rumors?” I shrugged.

“That you traded your position for the life of an omega.”

I said nothing.

Elias sighed.

“I’m not the best advisor for wolves in love. I’m still mad about my wife.” His gaze sharpened. “But I’ll tell you this-leave Moonville as soon as you can.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Isn’t it obvious? You’ve become easy prey. Your family held this place together for centuries. Believe me, men of your lineage made many enemies-and you’ve made a few yourself. Those old foxes will come for you once they know you’re vulnerable. And you’re not in a position to defend yourself.”

I considered it for a moment.

“You’re right.”

“Take your beloved with you. Get her out of this world. Build a life far from all of this. Live as humans, if you can.”

The advice was harsh.

And correct.

“Thank you,” I murmured.

“Always at your service, my lord.”

I tapped his shoulder in gratitude and walked on.

I didn’t look back.

I went straight to Maya’s room when I got home.

I opened the door quietly. The room was dim. Langford met me before I could ask anything.

“She’s stable,” she said softly. “Sleeping. She’ll likely remain that way for the next three days.”

I nodded.

I approached the bed. Maya looked peaceful-her face relaxed, untouched by the suffering she’d endured. I sat beside her and stayed there, just watching. I gently took her hand and pressed a kiss
