Chapter 91
MAYA
I hadn’t meant to drink that much.
I just needed
my
brain to shut up.

I opened a bottle of wine and poured a glass. Then another.
I curled up on the couch, the stem resting against my thigh, watching streetlights slip through the curtains in pale stripes. The heat under my skin hadn’t gone away. It had just… lowered. Gone quiet. Sneakier.
The wine helped dull that feeling creeping in.
My head started to sink back against the cushions. I thought about getting up, going to bed, locking the door out of habit… but my eyelids got too heavy.
And I passed out right there.
The dream came the way it always did.
No warning.
I knew I was inside it. But this time there was this strange awareness humming beneath everything -like I understood it was a nightmare even while it was happening. Same dream as always. Only this time it was sharper. Clearer.
The darkness wasn’t just darkness.
It was a place.
An attic.
My parents’ attic.
The air was thick-dust and old wood. I could see the beams overhead. The stacked boxes. The floorboards creaking under my feet.
And then I saw her.
My mom.
She was on her knees, hands shaking, holding something lit. Fire,
Small flames at first.
“Mom…” My voice came out thin. Childlike. “Why are you doing this?”

She was crying. Her face twisted like something inside her was breaking apart.
“No. Please… don’t.”
But she wasn’t looking at me.
She stood and ran for the stairs.
The fire spread too fast.
Way too fast.
It climbed the walls, licked at the boxes, devoured the dry beams overhead.
I tried to move, but my legs felt heavy. My body weak. Like I was sick.
“Wait!” I tried to shout.
Nothing came out.
It was like my lungs weren’t working. Like the air refused to cooperate.
Smoke flooded my eyes. My throat.
The heat turned unbearable.
I felt the flames at my back. Burning. Crawling up my skin.
I tried to scream again, but it was like my voice had been erased.
Then the attic door opened.
Footsteps came slowly down the stairs.

I knew that silhouette. He was always there. Always showed up when everything was already beyond saving.
But this time…
This time the face came into focus.
Not a shadow,
Him.
My Biological Psychology professor.
What the hell is he doing here?
That’s when a loud crack split through the dream.

Chapter 91
A sharp sound.
Like a door being slammed.
I jolted awake on my living room couch.

My whole body was shaking. I was drenched in sweat. My heart racing like I was still burning alive. The couch beneath me. The dark apartment around me. The sour taste of wine on my tongue.
The noise came again.
Knocking.
Hard.
Someone was pounding on my door.
Who would be knocking at this hour?
I stumbled to my feet, dragging a hand over my damp face. My legs still felt weak as I crossed the
room.
The knocking didn’t stop.
I opened the door.
Átila was standing there.
His hair was messy, like he’d left in a hurry. His expression was serious-but his eyes were different. Concerned.
“Professor?” I swallowed. “What are you doing here?”
“Are you okay?” His voice was low. Tight. “What were those screams?”
Shit.
I must’ve been screaming again.
The heat of embarrassment climbed faster than the flames in the dream.
“I’m fine.” I forced a steady breath. “It was just a nightmare.”
He didn’t look convinced. His gaze moved over my face, my shoulders, like he was checking for something worse.
“Do you… want to come in?” I asked before thinking.
He took a slow breath. His jaw tightened for a second. “It’s late.”

I dropped my eyes. “You’re right. Sorry. That was inappropriate”

I started closing the door, suddenly hyper-aware of how close he was. The way he was still looking
at me.
Before it could shut, he braced his arm against the frame.
“Are you alone?”
I swallowed and nodded. “Yeah. My roommate had to travel.”
His expression shifted again. Sharper. More… decided.
“Then I’m staying for a few minutes,” he said firmly. “Until I’m sure you’re actually okay.”
I bit back an embarrassed smile as he stepped into the apartment, eyes alert, scanning the like he was cataloging every detail. I closed the door slowly and turned the lock.
