I woke slowly, dragging myself up from a heavy sleep with the distinct sense that something had shifted. Before I even opened my eyes, I caught the smell of coffee. Strong. Fresh. Real. Not the bland, mechanical brew from the automatic machine I’d bought recently. This was richer. Warmer. Alive.

I opened my eyes and blinked at the ceiling, taking a few seconds to register where I was. The light slipping through the blinds hit at a different angle. And then the memory of last night crashed into me all at once.

Maya.

I sat up and scrubbed a hand over my face, still foggy. When I got to my feet and stepped into the hallway, the sight in front of me stopped me cold.

She was in the kitchen with her back to me, wearing nothing but my dress shirt. The fabric skimmed the tops of her thighs, leaving her long, bare legs completely exposed. Her hair fell loose down her back. She was stirring something in a skillet with an ease that felt almost too domestic for what we’d done just hours ago.

Without me saying a word, she glanced over her shoulder and smiled.

“Well, look who finally woke up. My sleepy kitten.”

The lazy, teasing way she said it made me cross the room without thinking twice. I stopped behind her, breathing in the scent of her skin tangled with coffee.

She rose onto her toes to kiss me. It was instinctive. Intimate. Like we’d done this a hundred times before. I tilted my head and brushed my mouth over hers. The kiss was slow. Warm. Dangerous in how right it felt.

“What’s all this?” I asked, my voice rougher than I meant it to be.

“Coffee. Scrambled eggs. Toast. Fruit. I didn’t know what you like, so I made a little of everything.”

I glanced at the counter. She’d arranged it all carefully, Simple plates, but set with intention. I smiled, genuinely,

“It looks amazing.”

She looked pleased with that. Carried the plates to the table while I grabbed the mugs and silverware. We sat across from each other. She pulled her chair sideways and tucked one leg up onto the seat, completely at ease in my shirt.

We ate in silence for a few minutes, trading glances now and then. It was comfortable. Easy. But

underneath it, I felt something in her. A faint tension humming just below the surface.

Halfway through breakfast, I wiped my mouth with a napkin and asked, “Want me to drive you to campus?”

She lifted her gaze slowly, studying me.

“You don’t think that might draw… attention?”

I frowned. She had a point.

“You’re right. I could drop you at the corner. There’s a quieter spot by the trees.”

She let out a soft laugh, eyes glinting.

“The whole forbidden-professor-and-student thing is kind of thrilling.”

I watched her smile for a few seconds. It was impossible not to smile back.

“But I’m going to have to pass on the ride.”

“Why?” I asked.

She looked down at her cup before answering.

“I’m not going to class for the next ten days.”

The words lingered between us. I studied her carefully. The posture. The brightness in her eyes. The almost imperceptible restlessness in her fingers. Beatrice’s warning echoed in my mind. This wasn’t an easy phase for Maya.

I knew immediately what it meant.

But I didn’t say it, Not yet.

“Okay,” I replied evenly, “Just tell me if you change your mind.”

We finished breakfast. I stood first and walked around the table until I was in front of her. I leaned down and pressed a lingering kiss to her lips. Then I rested my forehead against hers.

“Last night was incredible.”

“I was thinking the same thing, Professor,” she said, her smile wicked,

Before I could pull back, her hands slid down to my waist and started working at the button of my pants. I caught her wrists-firm, but not rough.

“Let’s save that for round two.”

She laughed and leaned back, pretending to surrender.

“Fine. I’ll behave. For now. Have a good class.”

She winked at me shamelessly, still wearing nothing but my shirt. That image burned into my mind as I stepped out of her apartment and crossed the hallway to mine.

She got feral when her heat hit.

I went back home shirtless, still in my pants, already knowing this day was going to be long.

The second I walked into my apartment, I grabbed my phone and called Beatrice.

She picked up on the third ring.

“Átila?”

“Where are you?”

“Northumberland. Came to see Cassian.”

I raised a brow even though she couldn’t see me. I didn’t question it. I hadn’t seen Cassian-or Kael, or Silas-in two years. To anyone else, that would look like neglect. To us, two years was nothing.

“And Maya?” she asked.

I was quiet for a few seconds before answering.

“I think her heat’s starting.”

On the other end, I heard her breathing shift.

“Do you want me to come back?”

“No,” I said immediately. “Stay. Enjoy the trip. I’ll keep an eye on her this week. She won’t be alone.”

Beatrice hesitated, then exhaled,

“Thank you”

I ended the call and stood by the window. Her curtains were partially drawn.

I texted the university some excuse about not feeling well. I didn’t teach that day. I spent the entire afternoon discreetly watching the movement in her apartment.

By nightfall, the restlessness won.

I crossed the hallway and knocked on her door. Waited.

No answer.

I knocked again.

Nothing.

The handle turned under my hand. Unlocked.

I stepped inside.

The living room was dark. Only the faint glow of streetlight slipped through the cracks in the curtains.

“Okay,” I muttered, moving deeper into the apartment.

I reached the bedroom and stopped at the threshold.

She was on the floor.

Chained.
