Chapter 98
MAYA
The bedroom door closed behind us.
I barely had time to lean against it before Beatrice slowly turned toward me.
She crossed her arms.
And just stared.
Not a normal look.
It was the look of a friend who knows you did something.
And wants every single detail.
“So..” she started.
“So what?”
She arched a brow.
“You might as well start talking, Miss Melrose.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, you do.”
She stepped closer.

“The apartment’s wrecked. You’re walking slow. His arms are scratched up like he wrestled a lion. And
you
both have that look.” She made a circular motion with her hand. “The ‘we share a secret
now’ look.”
I smiled, feeling my face heat,
“Bee!”
“Don’t ‘Bee’ me.”
She leaned in.
“What. happened. here?”
I bit my lip.
Then laughed.

Because there was no way I could lie to her.

“Something… intense happened. Very intense. If you know what I mean.”
She gave me a look that said: I know exactly what you mean.
“He stayed with you the whole time?”
I nodded.
“He didn’t go teach. Didn’t go to work. Didn’t… leave once.”
“He took care of you? So he knows you’re a-”
She didn’t finish.
Beatrice was the only person I truly trusted-the only one who knew the truth about what I am.
“Yes. He knows now.”
“So he managed to…” she murmured, mostly to herself. Then she looked up at me carefully. “He managed to stay with you even when you were in heat?”
“Uh-huh.”
She leaned back against the dresser..
“Wow. I didn’t think that was humanly possible. Do you remember everything?”
I closed my eyes for a second.
Flashes.
Heat.
Desperation.
Touch.
His body holding mine together.
“I remember.”
She studied me.
“And do you regret it?”
My heart answered before my mind did.
“No.”

A slow smile spread across her face.
“Then tell me how it was. I want details. Details, please.”
I groaned.
“Bee…”
“Tell me.”
I sat on the edge of the bed.

“I lost control. It wasn’t just desire. It was like my body took over. And he…” My voice faltered for a second. “He wasn’t afraid. He held on until the end.”
“He doesn’t strike me as the afraid type.”
“How are you so sure?”
Her eyes widened slightly before she cleared her throat.
“I mean-he just seems confident. Not that I’d know. I literally just met him, right?”
Beatrice tilted her head and changed the subject.
“Okay, but beyond all that… how did you feel? I want your feelings. Not just what happened.”
I swallowed.
“I felt… happy. But it wasn’t just pleasure or excitement. It was like some part of me already knew him. Like my body understood before my mind did. Like… we were meant to happen. And the strangest part? It didn’t even feel like my first time. Which is kind of crazy to admit. But I’ve never felt that comfortable with a man before. It was like I could take off all my armor and just be vulnerable. No fear. No defenses. No feeling like that made me weak.”
She went quiet for a few seconds,
“You’re falling for him.”
It wasn’t a question.
It was a verdict.
I tried to answer with sarcasm.
“I think that part’s pretty obvious.”
She laughed.

I looked down at my hands.
“When he left just now, I felt empty.”
“Hm.”
“That’s interesting,” she murmured.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Bee.”
She sighed.
“Do you remember ever feeling that way about anyone before?”

“No. Never. At least not that I can remember. What if I fell in love during the time my memory’s gone? What if I lost my virginity and don’t remember any of it?”
I shook my head.
“But that would be insanely unlucky, right? Falling in love exactly during the part of my life that got erased.”
“Have you remembered anything?” Beatrice asked, more serious now.
“To be honest…” I said, glancing toward the window. “I felt something.”
She instantly focused.
“Something like what?”
I took a deep breath.
“Not now. Last week, I had flashes. Quick ones. Like someone shoved images into my head without warning.”
She went still.
“What kind of images?”
I closed my eyes briefly.
“I saw a green field at night,.. maybe a farm or something…” I hesitated. “And I had this feeling like I was running.”
My chest tightened.

“I don’t know if they’re memories or if my brain’s just trying to fill in gaps. It could be hallucinations. It could just be my mind creating a narrative so things make sense. I started forcing it. Trying to rebuild the timeline. Searching for sensory triggers. But the more I pushed… the worse the headaches got.”
I pressed my fingers to my temple.
“Sharp pain. Throbbing. Like my brain was short-circuiting.”
“Oh my God, Maya.”
“But then I remembered what the doctor said.”
“That you can’t force it.”
I nodded.
“He said traumatic memories can come back naturally. But pushing can make it worse. It can create false memories. Trigger episodes. Or even…” I whispered the last part. “Make me lose my mind.”
That was what I feared most. Losing my mind.
I inhaled slowly.
