**Between the Wings of Twilight Lies the Memory of You**
by Liren Ava Roen
“Absolutely! Ms. Lopez is not only beautiful but also incredibly capable. You know her well, don’t you? She’s always presentable, and her culinary skills are exceptional… for a second marriage, a woman of her caliber is simply the ideal choice.”
My father’s face radiated joy, a wide grin stretching across his features, his delight impossible to conceal.
I couldn’t help but scoff, my eyes narrowing with disdain.
A good woman? Good enough to seduce her own brother-in-law, to betray her beloved sister for two decades? The thought made my stomach churn. It was a repulsive display of shamelessness from a man devoid of integrity and a woman who was nothing more than a cunning manipulator.
At that moment, the atmosphere shifted dramatically as several police officers entered the room. My lips curled into a smirk, a twisted sense of satisfaction flooding through me.
It was finally showtime.
Before my father could voice his confusion, the officers marched decisively upstairs, returning moments later with a disheveled Janice and a hefty man who was embarrassingly shirtless.
The guests gasped collectively, exchanging looks of disbelief and horror.
My father leaped to his feet, his expression morphing into one of shock. “What is the meaning of this?” he demanded, his voice rising above the murmurs.
The rotund man appeared dazed, clearly under the influence of something potent. Janice, on the other hand, was a complete mess, her eyes brimming with tears as she stumbled towards my father, desperation etched on her face.
An officer stepped forward, badge gleaming under the dim lights, his tone stern and unyielding. “We received an anonymous tip regarding illegal sex work and the recording of explicit videos for profit at this residence. We caught these two in the midst of what appeared to be a coerced encounter.”
The expressions of the guests shifted dramatically, their heads bowing as hushed whispers filled the air, eyes darting to witness the unfolding drama. My father’s complexion paled, a wave of humiliation washing over him as he stood before his guests, exposed.
“Isn’t it obvious? If she were truly as clean as she pretends, how could she have gotten pregnant out of wedlock and lived in someone else’s house for years? It’s clear… I just never imagined Mr. Jones would be willing to play the hero and take her in,” another chimed in, shaking her head.
“Exactly. It’s disgraceful. And Mr. Jones’s wife has only been gone for half a year. I can’t help but wonder if this sister of hers, this so-called prostitute, is what drove her to her grave. Did you see how she tried to pin everything on Mrs. Lancaster just now?”
The woman who had been the center of admiration moments ago had now become the subject of scandal and gossip.
My father, unable to withstand the weight of his shame, turned a deep shade of crimson. Through clenched teeth, he addressed his guests, desperation lacing his words. “I apologize, everyone. Something unforeseen has occurred at home, and this evening has taken a most unpleasant turn. I promise to make it up to you all at another time. I’m truly sorry.”
The guests, sensing the gravity of the situation, departed in silence, leaving behind the remnants of what was intended to be a grand celebration now reduced to a humiliating debacle.
In a fit of rage, my father swept everything off the table, the crash of plates, bowls, and glasses reverberating through the room like a thunderclap, a cacophony of shattered dreams and dignity.
