Liora’s POV
“Liora. Liora!”
“Mm… I don’t want pancakes… Maybe waffles…”
“Liora!”
I jolted awake at the sound of Mia’s hissing voice, her hands shaking my shoulder violently. Images of rogues filled my mind, and jerking upright, I gasped, “What? What is it?”
The room was quiet. It was past midnight, and most of the students had gone to bed by now. Mia was kneeling on the edge of my bed, eyes wide. She pointed at the window. “Marissa’s girlfriend is sneaking out!”
“What?” I muttered, rubbing my eyes.
Mia sighed and grabbed my hand, unceremoniously dragging me over to the window. She jabbed her finger against the foggy glass. “Look! You can see them from here!”
I had to squint to make it out. At first, I didn’t see anything—just the stretch of dark grass behind the dorms that eventually met the distant treeline. But then I saw them. Figures moving across the lawn.
My heart leapt into my throat. “How do you know it’s Marissa’s girlfriend?” I asked.
Mia wrung her hands nervously. “I heard her talking to her friends earlier. Around dinnertime. I overheard something about sneaking out and looking for Marissa.”
I whipped my head toward Mia. “And you didn’t think to tell anyone?”
“I didn’t think they were serious!” she retorted. “I figured no one would be dumb or crazy enough to try anything like that. Not after what happened to Bella.”
I dragged my lower lip through my teeth. Mia was right. If I had been in her position, I might have thought the same thing. Still, someone needed to stop them. It was dangerous out there, and Marissa’s girlfriend was clearly just being reckless. I couldn’t blame her, of course, but it didn’t make it okay.
Without hesitating, I turned, grabbing my hoodie off the back of my desk chair. I tugged it on over my head while I stuffed my feet into my shoes.
“Where are you going?” Mia whispered.
