Both Callum and Zane shot me matching looks, but I ignored them. Finally, after a moment, Callum sighed and relented.

“Fine. But if either of you get us caught, I’m not sticking up for you.”

Zane’s mouth curved. “Wouldn’t expect any less from you, homie.”

Callum rolled his eyes and disappeared into his room to get dressed.

A few minutes later, the three of us were slipping out through the window of the common room, presumably just as Marissa’s girlfriend and her friends had. It was the only way to avoid being seen by security, and it involved having to walk along the ledge beneath the window, then climb the trellis down to the ground below. Zane went ahead, and Callum let me go next.

“Princess,” Zane said, extending his hand. I ignored him, hopping down the last few feet. Callum jumped down behind me.

“Let’s hurry,” Callum said, keeping his voice low. “Liora, which way did you see them go?”

I pointed off toward the treeline, and we quickly made our way in that direction. The group was gone by now, but they hadn’t exactly been careful about leaving a trail; it took all of five seconds to spot their footprints in the frosty grass, leading a straight line to the woods.

We reached the forest without incident, then paused, peering into the darkness. My throat bobbed. The forest was already eerie enough these days with two girls missing, and now it was even creepier in the dark.

Zane took my hand, lacing his fingers with mine. I shot him a withering glare, but he just winked. I hated to admit it, but I was a little too creeped out by the way the tree branches moved in the night like wraiths to let go. I pulled my hood up over my head and followed closely behind him.

Callum walked a few paces ahead, scanning the ground as we followed the students’ trail. For a few minutes, it was completely silent. The only sound was that of an owl hooting in the distance, which I supposed was a good thing. It meant that there were no predators out here.
