We didn’t stop until we reached the edge of the forest. It was only then that I froze, releasing Helen’s hand. “Go,” I said, giving her and Marissa’s girlfriend a shove. “Run back to campus. Climb up the trellis and walk along the ledge—”

“We know how to get in without getting caught. But why aren’t you coming with us?”

I hesitated, not sure how to respond. It wasn’t as if I could fight the rogues. Not really. Not without my wolf. But hearing the sounds of fighting behind me… I couldn’t just walk away. Zane and Callum might need me. This was all my fault. I had to do something.

“Just… go,” I said. I held out my hand to Marissa’s girlfriend. “Can I borrow your knife?”

She paused, uncertain, then nodded and handed me the knife. With that, I turned and fled back into the woods.

I didn’t make it back to the clearing. The sounds of fighting continued to rage on up ahead, but before I could reach them, a figure with a scar stepped in front of me.

“Come back to offer yourself up?” he hissed, approaching me.

I lifted the blade. “Take another step closer and I’ll cut you.”

The rogue tilted his head and studied the knife. His nostrils flared as he sniffed the air. “Hm… No wolf? I thought you were supposed to be a female Alpha.”

I didn’t respond. I just lunged, slashing toward his neck. But without my wolf, the rogue’s reflexes were faster. He stepped out of the way, grabbed my arm, and twisted so hard that I cried out. The knife caught my palm, cutting deep, as he twisted it away.

I gasped as blood gushed out of my palm. The pain made my head spin. The rogue wrapped one hand covering my mouth, the other holding the knife to my neck, as he pulled me back against his chest. I kicked and scrabbled, but it was no use. He was strong, even for a rogue, and the gash in my hand was making it hard to think straight.

“Come on,” I thought desperately, as if my wolf could hear me somehow. “If you’re going to come back at any point, now is the time!”
