“She’s not going anywhere.”

The sound of Callum’s voice made us all look up. He swept into the room like a cloud of rolling thunder, Zane on his heels. His eyes were darker than I’d ever seen them before. He came to stand in front of me and turned, facing the security guards while Zane blocked the doorway.

“I won’t let you expel Liora tonight,” he said. “And if you try, you’ll have to go through me first.”

The room fell silent. Callum’s back pressed against my cheek as he backed against me, nearly sandwiching me against the wall, spreading his arms wide to keep the guards from getting closer. My face heated.

I peeked over Callum’s shoulder to see Bianca, the guards, and everyone else staring at Callum in shock.

“Callum, baby,” Bianca whispered, holding her hand out to him, “you’re not thinking straight. You must have hit your head during the—”

“Would you just shut the hell up for once about something that has nothing to do with you?” Callum snapped.

Bianca froze, hand still hovering midair. I stared at Callum’s profile in shock. I couldn’t believe he’d just said that. For me. No one else could believe it, either—not even the guards—if the looks on their faces were any indication.

After a moment, Bianca’s face went crimson. She ground her teeth at me, then turned and stormed out without another word, shoving past Zane so hard that he stumbled.

Suddenly, footsteps pounded in the hallway. Several sets. Mr. Alder burst into the room a moment later, followed by Callum’s parents.

“Callum!” his mother hissed. “Step away from that wolfless this instant!”

“No.” Callum didn’t budge. “Alder, if you’re going to expel Liora, then I’ll drop out of school.” He looked at his parents. “And I’ll break off my engagement.”

His parents gasped, his mother clutching the pearls around her throat. His father looked like his head was about to explode. “Callum, watch what you’re saying,” he growled.

“I know exactly what I’m saying. Liora broke the rules right along with me and Zane tonight. If one of us is going to be expelled, then we all should be.”
