Anything except the truth.
“Princess?” A soft voice suddenly made me turn to find a petite servant with big eyes smiling up at me. She pointed to a large crate by the front door that was labeled “Banquet Supplies.” “Where should I put that?”
“In the banquet hall,” I said without thinking. The servant curtsied and scurried away, directing some other members of the staff to help her move it. They dragged it across the stone floor, the sounds of scraping echoing through the foyer.
I only realized what I had done when I turned to find the entire group of students staring at me. Bianca stood at the forefront, and her face was a deeper shade of crimson than the tapestry hanging on the wall behind her.
My blood drained from my face. I suddenly realized that I had not only been called “Princess” by one of the staff, but had replied with authority and without thinking. All while Bianca, the so-called “real Princess”, was standing right there and had been completely ignored by the staff.
Jessica turned to Bianca with her brows lifted. “Why… Why did she… But you’re…”
Bianca looked like she was going to explode for a moment, but she quickly smoothed it over with a smile that was all teeth. “That was just a mix-up,” she said flatly. She then turned away and clapped her hands together. “Come on! Time to tour the second floor.”
I stood there as the group shuffled away, receiving more than a few confused looks. I felt sick, and not just from that brief incident. Something about being here was making my stomach turn into knots.
I needed some air.
I recalled that there was a nice courtyard not far from here, so while the group headed upstairs, I slipped off in that direction. The courtyard was located through another set of double-doors with falcon head emblems engraved into the wood. When I pushed outside, the cold air hit me like a slap, but I finally felt like I could breathe.
A light snow had begun to fall in the courtyard, casting a hush over the landscape. I stepped into the colonnade and looked around at the gentle white dusting that covered the statues and the single fountain, which was currently turned off due to the time of year.
Sighing, I made my way over to it and brushed the snow off to sit. But as I turned, I realized that I wasn’t alone like I thought.
Callum was standing there. He’d followed me.
Liora’s POV
The inside of the castle was just as beautiful as I remembered. Moody lighting, antique furnishings, portraits of royals long passed lining the walls. But it was not home. This wasn’t the royal palace, but my cousin Ambrose’s home.
