Ambrose beamed, looking away from me again, and lifted his hands to quiet everyone.
“We’ll be holding the ceremony this weekend,” he went on once the room had hushed again. “You’re all invited, of course. I hope you all fall just as head over heels for her as I did over the past month.”
“You met her a month ago?” Zane asked, stuffing his hands into his pockets.
Ambrose glanced at me again. I looked away on instinct, face heating. I didn’t know why I felt like this. Maybe I was just ashamed of the fact that Bianca was still stealing my identity. Or maybe it was something else. That strange, dark shadow that seemed to be looming over my shoulder.
“Something like that,” he finally replied. When I looked up again, he was no longer looking at me, and I found myself strangely relieved.
Bianca clapped her hands together. “Well, we should celebrate, then!” she exclaimed. She gestured at a nearby servant, snapping her fingers impatiently. The servant hesitated, glancing between me and Ambrose. This time, it was Ambrose who nodded, although the quick look he gave me after was nothing short of amused. I felt even more ashamed.
The servant hastily poured Ambrose a drink and handed it to him. He took it, still smiling that almost feline smile, and lifted his glass as Bianca made a toast. Everyone cheered and took a sip of their drinks. Callum and I were the only ones who didn’t have one, not that I minded.
For some reason, I had no desire to drink in this place ever again.
Afterwards, the students went back to mingling. Ambrose chatted with Bianca for a while longer like they were old friends. I found the whole thing very strange, but I eventually decided that he must have been playing along, or maybe he knew her already.
Either way, I got the sense that Bianca wouldn’t get her comeuppance this weekend like I had planned. No matter. I had time.
As the evening wrapped up and everyone began retiring to their rooms to rest before tomorrow’s festivities, I passed by Ambrose. He hadn’t said a word to me yet, but before I slipped away, his hand shot out to touch my wrist.
I froze.
