The Rejected True Heiress (Liora and Callum) novel Chapter 252

Suddenly, Mia’s voice called out from her room. “Liora? Everything okay?”

Ambrose straightened. He said nothing. Just smiled at me in that creepy way for another moment before he turned and left.

By the following day, I wasn’t feeling any better about this place or my cousin. I wanted to leave, but the bus wouldn’t be taking us back to campus until tomorrow, so for now, I was trapped. We’d woken to several inches of snow as well, which would make it impossible to try and make it on foot on these mountain roads. If I’d had my wolf, then I could have made it. But I didn’t, so I had to wait for the bus.

The day was uneventful so far. Bianca, Ambrose, and the servants had been rushing around all morning in preparation for the wedding.

The banquet hall had been transformed from a dark, barely used space to a warm, inviting atmosphere. The air smelled like spiced wine and roasted meats, and a string quartet was playing in the corner. Ambrose and his bride were to be married at midnight, according to her pack’s traditions.

“His bride to be is really gorgeous,” Mia pointed out, gesturing over to where Ambrose’s fiancee was standing. She was wearing a cream-colored gown that hugged everything, and her long, chestnut hair was falling down her back in waves.

She was gorgeous. But she was also incredibly young. At least, she looked very young; like she had only just turned eighteen.

Ambrose was older than me by ten years. I found it odd that he would find a bride so young, but I supposed if they were fated mates, then maybe that wasn’t up to them. As long as they were both consenting and happy.

And they did seem happy. For the most part, anyway. Ambrose had his arm around her, and she was smiling up at him like he held the sun in his palms.

But he wasn’t looking at her. Just holding her possessively while he spoke to others. I’d been surreptitiously watching them all evening, and he hadn’t even made eye contact or said a word to her, nor had he let her wander off on her own. It was like she was his personal accessory, not her own person.

The whole thing was very strange indeed. I tried not to let it get to me, but I couldn’t help it. It wasn’t just this castle that had me feeling uncomfortable; it was him.
