The Rejected True Heiress (Liora and Callum) novel Chapter 258

Liora’s POV

Mia started to sway on her feet after her third glass of champagne. Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes sparkling in that way they only did when she had just a little bit too much to drink.

“Okay. I think you’ve had enough,” I laughed, placing my hand on her shoulder. The party was still raging on; people were dancing, and the lights had been dimmed slightly. “Remember, you don’t want to be too drunk for this.”

“Aw…” Mia pushed a strand of dark hair out of her eyes. “I guess you’re right. Time to execute Operation Wedding Crasher?”

“Shh!” I warned, but Mia was already turning away. I watched from the sidelines as she sauntered over to Zane, who was currently moving on the dance floor by himself.

I sipped my champagne as I watched Mia walk up to Zane. She placed her hands on his shoulders and whispered something in his ear, canting her heel as she leaned close.

Zane made a face and pushed her away. Not hard, but just enough to make her stumble back a few steps.

“Don’t touch me, Mia. That was just one night, nothing more. We’re over.”

Mia froze. Even from where I was standing, I could see her lower lip quivering theatrically. A few students dancing around them turned their heads to see what was going on.

I quickly looked over at Ambrose and his fiancee, who were standing by the dance floor. His fiancee had a drink perched delicately in her hand. She looked bored, staring wistfully at the tapestries. Ambrose hadn’t invited her to dance all night.

Ambrose, for his part, was looking into his drink with a bored expression on his face. He didn’t notice the altercation yet.

“Come on…” I whispered. “Look at Mia…”

But to my dismay, Ambrose didn’t follow her. He just leaned one shoulder against the wall and sipped his drink.

Dammit. Maybe this wouldn’t work after all.

I hardly dared to think that Ambrose had changed. He was still the same guy who had assaulted me years ago. But maybe he would be on good behavior tonight for the wedding.

I glanced at his young fiancee, who still looked bored and lonely, now checking her manicure. He wasn’t talking to her, even though their wedding ceremony was supposed to happen in less than an hour.

Maybe he hadn’t gone after Mia because he already had what he wanted. A naive girl he could take advantage of whenever he felt like it. Maybe he didn’t need to assault random women anymore because he could assault the one he’d brought home from overseas.
