I was considering walking over to her and simply telling her the truth about him when a figure suddenly appeared by my side. I glanced over, expecting it to be Zane, Callum, or even Mia, but was startled to find Jessica standing there.

“You should be careful,” she said without looking at me. She gazed out over the crowd, swirling her wine around in her cup. “Whatever you have planned could backfire spectacularly. Bianca is onto you.”

“What?” I blurted out. But she was already walking away, slipping back into the crowd like she hadn’t spoken to me at all.

I stood there for a long moment, rooted to my spot. If Bianca knew about our plan, why had Jessica warned me? She was still Bianca’s little servant. I thought she hated me.

Strange.

Just then, I spotted movement. I whipped my head around to see that the side door had opened, and a flash of dark fabric disappeared through it. It could have been a servant. But then I looked over at where Ambrose and his fiancee had been standing, and realized that she was alone.

Ambrose was gone.

Had he taken the bait after all?

I looked at Zane. He met my gaze and nodded curtly before turning on his heel and moving toward his next station.

Now it was my turn to make my move. I set my unfinished drink down on a nearby table and walked over to the grand doors, summoning as much casualness into my gait as I could. No one seemed to notice my departure. I slipped out without making a sound.

The moment I was in the hallway, I leaned one hand against the wall and slipped my heels off. Mia was supposed to head down the hall, where there was a window seat perfectly suited for being spotted while crying. The perfect spot for Ambrose to see her and make his move.

Once I was barefoot, ensuring I didn’t make any sound, I hurried in that direction.
