I froze.
“Mia?”
The room was dark and empty. I flicked on the light, but she wasn’t there.
I’d expected Mia to be sitting on her bed, likely with some tale as to how our plan had gone awry. But she was gone. She wasn’t in my room, either, nor was she in the bathroom.
Frowning, I pulled out my phone and texted Zane. “Is Mia with you?”
“No. I thought she was supposed to be with you?”
“She’s not at the emergency rendezvous spot?”
“I’m alone, Liora. All I have of her is this damn handprint on my face.”
My heart sank. I texted Callum next. “Mia’s missing.”
There was a long pause. He read my text, but didn’t answer. To my surprise, a few minutes later, my door burst open. Callum and Zane both surged into the room.
“What do you mean, she’s missing?” Callum snarled.
I threw my hands up in the air and told them everything. By the time I was finished, they’d both gone pale. So had I. The realization hit us like a brick wall.
This was bad. Really bad.
The party raged on downstairs. I could hear music, laughter, and voices echoing through the halls. We split up—Zane went back to the party to see if Mia was there while Callum and I searched the rest of the castle.
The entire time we searched, my mind was whirring with all the worst possibilities. What if Ambrose knew about our plan and had done something to her, something even worse than we anticipated? What if he and Bianca colluded to hurt her as some kind of revenge against me?
“This is all my fault,” I muttered as Callum and I raced through the halls. “I never should have let her get involved. I should have just kept this whole thing to myself.”
