Liora’s POV
Callum’s hands were warm against my face and the kiss was deep and certain, nothing at all like a mistake, and some traitorous part of me responded before my brain had any say in the matter.
My free hand found the front of his shirt. I leaned in. I let it happen. And I enjoyed it, thoroughly, deeply, and more than anything I’d ever enjoyed before.
Then it was over all too quickly, and the rest of the world came back into focus. I remembered that we were standing in the hallway with an audience, and that, just minutes ago, I had hated Callum so intensely that I had been considering contacting my father about another name from that list.
I pulled back and looked at him. He looked back at me, chest rising and falling, eyes searching my face.
My hand moved.
He caught my wrist before my palm connected with his face. His fingers wrapped around it firmly. I heard a few sharp inhales from the students still hovering nearby. I tried to pull free, but he held on fast.
“Liora.” His voice was low.
“Let go of me,” I snarled.
“No.”
I continued to pull, but Callum’s grip never wavered. He just waited, his gaze imploring. Finally, I relaxed a little. Or at least, I stopped actively trying to yank my arm away. Partially because my leg was throbbing now from all the activity, and at some point, I had dropped my crutch without realizing it.
“I’m sorry,” he said once I was calm enough to listen.
My lips parted.
“I should have listened to you sooner,” Callum went on. “I should have believed you instead of choosing her over and over again. Every time you tried to tell me something was wrong, I tried to justify it. But I should have listened to you, and instead I hurt you, and for that, I’m sorry.”
The hallway was extremely quiet for a place that had become completely crowded with people over the last few moments.
My heart pounded. I looked up at Callum, waiting for the universe to do something. For him to laugh and admit that he was just testing me, and I had failed. For Bianca to come out of the woodworks and slice my throat. For the ceiling to cave in.
