“My dad is an understanding man,” I said, turning to face him fully, crosslegged on the bed, “but he’s also a King. He’ll expect more of you now.”

“I’ll do anything.” Callum took my hands in his.

I smiled faintly, cheeks flushing, and it had nothing to do with the sex we’d just had. I laced my fingers through his and met his gaze. “We should go to him tomorrow,” I said. “You can formally approach him at the palace.”

At the mention of the palace, the tips of Callum’s ears reddened a little. “The palace?” he asked. “Will I even be welcome? I thought he told you not to tell me your identity.”

“Well… He’ll certainly be a little pissed,” I said, chuckling wryly. “But you’ll be welcome.”

Callum thought about that for a few moments. Then, smiling, he said, “We’re going to the palace.”

“If that’s what you want,” I said softly.

He looked up at me. “Are you kidding me? Of course I want to go to the palace.”

I couldn’t blame him for his eagerness, but my face fell a little of its own accord when he said that. It felt like a reminder that, at the core of all this, Callum’s primary goal had always been to marry a princess.

“Hey.” Callum cupped my face in his hands and forced me to look at him. “It’s not like that,” he said. “Whatever you’re thinking, it’s not that.”

I exhaled a little. “Sorry. It’s just… a sore subject. For obvious reasons.”

“I know.” His thumbs traced across my cheekbones. “But I love you regardless of all of this, Liora. I loved you before I knew about any of it. Before palaces and titles and crowns.”

I wanted to believe him. So I did. I put my hands around his wrists and let him draw me into his lap, where he encircled me with his arms again, then laid back against the pillows.

We were quiet again for a little while. I pressed my ear against his chest and listened to his heartbeat, sure and steady. It began to lull me to sleep, and soon, my breathing began to deepen.
