Liora’s POV
I was certain I had misheard.
Did he really just say that I was going to marry… Ambrose? Of all people?
“You’re joking,” I blurted out.
My father’s expression didn’t so much as flicker. “I’m not.”
“Dad.” I turned to him fully, away from Ambrose, like if I didn’t look at him he might cease to exist. “This is Ambrose. My cousin. The guy who assaulted me when I was underage, and at least a dozen other girls. The piece of shit—” I glanced at Ambrose— “who was supposed to go to prison. Or have you forgotten?”
My father just looked at me with that same flat, unreadable expression. Like he was hearing me, but it wasn’t really registering.
“Dad.” I grabbed his arm. “Are you hearing me?”
“The charges were dropped,” he said suddenly, blinking as if clearing a fog from his eyes.
I stared at him. “What?”
“The charges were reviewed and subsequently dropped. Ambrose has settled matters privately with the relevant parties.” He gently removed my hand from his arm. “He’s a changed man, Liora.”
I looked over my shoulder at Ambrose, who was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets looking faintly amused by all of this. Changed man. Bull-fucking-shit.
“He is most definitely not a changed man,” I said. “He is the exact same man he has always been, and you know that, and I cannot believe you would even consider—”
“He has land,” my father cut me off. “A large, fully-staffed estate. Titles that trace back four generations. He has the resources and the standing to be a proper consort for the female Alpha, and the match keeps the bloodline within the royal family.”
“I don’t give a shit about the bloodline! He’s a rapist!”
“The decision has been made.” His voice was final. The voice I had always respected, but right now it made my skin crawl because this wasn’t right. This wasn’t him. My father had promised that Ambrose would be taken care of. That he would never be able to hurt anyone again.
