Liora’s POV
My bedchamber, the one I’d slept in since I was old enough to leave the nursery, barely looked like mine anymore.
Red gowns crammed the wardrobe where my things used to hang. Jewelry lay in a tangled heap across the vanity, most of it mine, some of it my mother’s. And her perfume had soaked into everything, the curtains, the carpet, the bedding, too sweet and heavy enough to make my eyes water now that my nose actually worked properly again.
“She nested in our den,” my wolf growled. “I should have taken more than a tiny drop of blood from her cheek.”
I didn’t disagree.
“We can find you another room,” Callum said from the doorway. “There have to be fifty in this place, right?”
“No.” I crossed to the nearest window and wrenched the latch open. “This one’s mine. She doesn’t get to keep it.”
He didn’t argue. He just went to the window on the other side of the bed and did the same, and between the two of us, every window in the room was thrown wide within a minute. The breeze rolled in off the city, cool and clean, billowing the curtains and carrying out the worst of her smell.
The perfume clung anyway, but it would come out eventually, right along with the rest of the ghosts she’d left behind.
Callum came up behind me while I was still glaring at the tangle of jewelry on the vanity. How dare she take my mother’s jewelry? After everything she and that witch put her through—how dare she?
His arms slid around my waist and his chin came down to rest against my temple, instantly soothing the fire in my chest.
“It’ll take days to air out on its own,” he said.
“I know.”
“There’s a faster way.” His mouth found the spot just below my ear. “Wolves cleanse a space with their own scent. It’s tradition.”
I snorted. “You just made that up.”
“It’s ancient and sacred, actually.”
“You literally just made it up ten seconds ago.”
