Chapter 697

Cupid

My cellphone rang insistently in my pocket, but I pulled it out only to power it off completely.

That’s what I should have done from the beginning. I should have known that Catherine being my manager would bring more trouble than anything good.

I turned toward the door of the ward and stepped back inside with a small, reassuring smile.

Finished

Snow had already changed into the thin hospital gown and was seated on the edge of the bed while the nurse finished preparations to wheel her away.

“I’ll wait in the hall,” I said tenderly. “You shouldn’t worry about anything. Okay?”

She searched my eyes in silence, then gave a quiet nod. They began to wheel her forward, but she reached out suddenly and caught my hand again, fingers tightening as though anchoring herself.

At that exact moment, the door swung open and a doctor appeared in the doorway.

“It’s time now.”

With that, I finally turned fully to Snow. She still wouldn’t let go. Fear shimmered in her eyes not just nerves, but something deeper, raw, as if she already dreaded what the results might whisper. We needed to know, though. No matter how much it hurt.

I dropped to one knee in front of her wheelchair so our faces were level, cupping her cheek gently in my palm.

“How do you feel?” I asked instead of rushing her, voice soft.

She searched my gaze for one heart-stopping second after another before the truth slipped out.

“Scared.”

Silence wrapped around us, thick and heavy. I nodded slowly.

“I am too.” I admitted quietly. “That makes both of us. But we’ll be fine. Either way the results go… you know I’ll always be here, right?”

“Love me the same as now?” Her voice cracked just a little.

“Love you like always.” I leaned in, pressing a slow kiss to her temple, breathing her in.

Only then did she finally release my hand. I gave her one last tender smile, helped guide the wheelchair forward until the nurses took over, and watched as they rolled her down the corridor and out of sight.

The door clicked shut behind them.

Alone in the sterile hallway, the loneliness hit like cold water. I wanted her back. Her warmth, her voice, her hand in mine.
