"No," Zane smiled.

"Then why are you pacing? Can't you just sit on the sofa?"

"I was just waiting to see if Dad came back."

"I told you he went to Eastford to visit the Wainwrights. Weren't you listening?"

"Oh," Zane murmured nonchalantly. "What's going on in Eastford?"

"Family matters."

Zane nodded, not really caring, before realizing something was off. "If he went to the Wainwrights, why didn't you go with him?"

"Because of you!" Elena snapped. "Since you're here, I made plans to have tea with Mrs. Neville tomorrow. You're going to drive me, and it'll give the ladies a chance to see if anyone catches your eye."

Zane frowned. "Mom, have I really fallen that far?"

"What do you think?"

"Mom, I have my own plans. You don't need to worry about this."

"Save it. Bring a girl home first, then we'll talk."

Where was he supposed to find one? The woman he wanted was still married to someone else.

"Mom, my schedule is packed tomorrow. Ask Jasper Yale if you don't believe me."

"Don't give me that nonsense. Jasper does whatever you tell him. That former playboy is just as hopeless, ready to hang himself on the same tree as you."

Early the next morning, wearing the custom shirt, Zane ordered Jasper to invent a business trip for him.

Jasper looked confused. "If you want to go on vacation, just say so."
