The father of the little girl practically flew down the stairs. Even though he knew his child wouldn't go missing in The Southern Harmony Hotel, and even though he was a police officer, panic still gripped him.
Zane Whitaker laughed. "Is that really necessary? Who would dare steal your daughter? Her grandfather and granduncle would tear the city apart to find her."
The man approaching was Zane's cousin, Tobias Wainwright.
Zane's mother, Elena Whitaker, and Tobias's father were first cousins.
Tobias's wife was a daughter of the Blanchards, a family deeply entrenched in the law enforcement system. Her uncle by marriage was the Police Commissioner, the man who controlled Eastford's entire police force.
Tobias himself was an officer—a chief in his own right.
So who would steal a child from their family? Did they have a death wish?
Tobias chuckled. "I can't help it. Her grandparents coddle her too much. If she even gets a scratch, I'll be the one getting yelled at. My parents don't listen to reason anymore."
Watching Tobias pick up his daughter, Zane felt a fierce pang of envy. He thought to himself, *When I get married, I'm having a daughter too.*
"Jealous?" Tobias asked, raising an eyebrow with a smirk.
"I'll have my chance to have a daughter soon enough. My future mother-in-law has the right genetics for it," Zane replied.
"You want to get back with your ex-wife?" Tobias looked surprised. His ex-wife came from a family of two sisters, but the woman's sheer ruthlessness was hard to put into words. She was more aggressive than most men and completely obsessed with her career. Giving him one child was already a miracle.
Tobias didn't think they were compatible at all.
"No," Zane answered flatly.
Hearing this, Tobias laughed and offered some advice. "If you want a daughter, first you need to get married. And before that, you need a girlfriend, and then you have to turn her into your wife."
Zane thought to himself, *My future wife hasn't even finalized her divorce yet. The moment she does, I'm bringing her home.*
Just then, Cyrus Vaughn walked in through the entrance. A doorman greeted him respectfully, "Good evening, Mr. Vaughn."
The moment the little girl saw Cyrus, she scrambled out of her father's arms and launched herself at him. "Uncle Cyrus! Lily missed you!"
Zane shot another envious glare in Cyrus's direction.
