Zane rushed the entire way and made it to The Southern Harmony Hotel just minutes before the scheduled time.
Elara was already waiting in the private dining room.
The guest he was hosting tonight was the top executive of the Metropolitan Investment Group—the Chairman himself.
Zane covered his mouth and explained softly to Elara, "The person keeping us company tonight is the Director of the First Bureau of the municipal government. His official rank might not seem extremely high, but he's the Mayor's Chief of Staff. In political circles, they call him the 'Number Two.' Anyone who wants to advance their career has to cross his bridge."
Elara turned to look at him in absolute shock. Did he really wield that much power?
In the past, she had gone to immense lengths to pull strings for Julian. She was intimately aware of the immense power a Chief of Staff held. When she had tried to lobby Governor Lewis's Chief of Staff, she had to exhaust every possible avenue, ultimately relying on the Sterling Patriarch's connections just to get a foot in the door.
And Zane had simply invited him out to act as a dinner companion?
Because the reality was, no matter how powerful the Chairman of MIG seemed, he was still just the one executing orders. If you wanted real leverage, you needed the politicians calling the shots.
Zane whispered, "Having him here solidifies everything. It also does MIG a favor. Miles Beck isn't an easy man to book."
"Mr. Whitaker, you have roots this deep even in Eastford?"
Seeing Elara staring at him in awe, Zane smiled. "I don't have that much power. My cousin, Tobias, is Chief Beck's cousin-in-law. If I had this kind of network back in the Capital, I'd be walking sideways by now."
Elara suppressed a laugh. "Mr. Whitaker, you're already incredibly formidable."
"Do you really think I'm formidable?" Zane looked at her, asking earnestly.
Elara nodded. "Very formidable. I deeply admire you."
Zane's mood soared. He grinned. "Earning your admiration is my absolute honor."
The moment Zane finished speaking, a waiter opened the door to the private room.
