The next morning, Elara woke up tangled in Zane's embrace.
His arm was still locked securely around her waist.
"Mr. Whitaker, time to get up."
Zane had slept like the dead. Roused by her voice, the incredible memories of last night came flooding back, and he immediately tightened his grip, leaning in to kiss her.
Elara dodged him. "No, I haven't brushed my teeth."
Settling for her cheek, Zane kissed her softly, a thoroughly satisfied grin spreading across his face. "Good morning, Ms. Vance."
Seeing that he was fully awake, Elara peeled his arm off her waist, snatched her towel from the nightstand, wrapped it tightly around herself, and bolted for the bathroom, locking the door behind her.
Propping his head up on one hand, Zane watched her slightly frantic retreat, his eyes incredibly soft.
He wanted to wake up to that sight every single day.
-
Jasper Yale watched Zane strut out of the elevator, radiating an absolutely obnoxious glow. "Boss, did my sister finally give you the time of day?"
Zane smirked. "Does it matter?"
Jasper narrowed his eyes. "What exactly is giving you this level of arrogance?"
Zane scoffed. "You wouldn't understand even if I told you."
"Tch. I'm just making sure you haven't lost your mind."
"Get out of my face. Go tell the Vance Properties project team we're having a meeting. We're changing the acquisition to a capital injection starting today."
"Boss, are you still drunk from last night? The board hasn't approved it. Where's the money coming from? Thin air?"
"Stop asking questions and go make the announcement."
-
The meeting was set, and Zane unilaterally announced the termination of the acquisition, pivoting immediately to a massive capital injection.
The executives around the table stared at him, waiting for the rest of the plan.
Jasper rolled his eyes internally. There was no 'rest of the plan.' The guy didn't have a single piece of official paperwork to back this up, and here he was, throwing his weight around.
Zane instructed them to begin execution immediately and worry about the paperwork later. The capital injection was non-negotiable.
Even though Zane was only the CEO on paper, he was the heir apparent. Sometimes, his raw ambition carried more weight than any meticulously drafted proposal.
As soon as the meeting adjourned, Jasper chased him down the hall. "You went to see Mrs. Sterling last night, didn't you?"
"What kind of spell did she put on you?"
