Zane glared at Sebastian with deep suspicion. Elara didn't have feelings for him?
He refused to believe that. She had to have feelings for him; that was the only reason she would sleep with him.
Zane had zero patience for this pessimistic nonsense.
"I'm going home."
But instead of driving back to his penthouse, muscle memory hijacked the steering wheel, and he found himself pulling up outside The Vance Estate.
He had absolutely no excuse to call her down, so he just rolled down his window and stared up at the second floor.
The lights in the upstairs rooms were blazing. He scanned every single window, desperately hoping to catch a glimpse of her.
But she wasn't standing by the glass.
Zane pulled a pack of cigarettes from the center console, lit one, and took a slow, deep drag.
He smoked quietly, his eyes fixed on the house.
Upstairs, Eleanor Barnes pushed open the study door and walked in carrying a cup of ginseng tea.
"Whose car is that parked outside? Doesn't look like Julian's."
Frowning slightly, Elara got up and walked over to the window.
It was too dark to make out the man smoking in the driver's seat, but she instantly recognized the car. It was Zane's sports car.
The second Zane saw her silhouette in the window, he threw the car door open and stepped out, terrified she wouldn't see him. He had barely raised his hand to wave when the heavy curtains were violently yanked shut.
Elara had absolutely no desire to acknowledge his existence. She turned to her mother. "It's the CEO of Whitaker Group. We're having a dispute over the acquisition contract. I turned down his terms."
"Oh," Eleanor said softly. "I was going to suggest inviting him inside for tea."
"Don't. We have absolutely nothing left to discuss."
Standing in the street, Zane stared at the closed curtains, his face crumbling with disappointment. She had definitely seen him.
She was definitely still furious.
He climbed slowly back into his car, pulling the door shut with a pathetic thud.
He sat there in the dark for a long time before finally starting the engine and driving home.
The next morning, the second Zane stepped into the office, he demanded a progress meeting.
