Left with no choice, Zane checked his watch, grabbed his suit jacket, and headed downstairs to the dinner appointment.
As soon as he walked into the lobby, he stopped at the front desk. "Does Vance Properties have any reservations here tonight?"
When the hostess confirmed they didn't, Zane let out a sigh of relief.
He had been forced into two dinners with Nadia before, and both times, he had the spectacular bad luck of running into Elara.
Tonight, he needed to defuse this ticking time bomb once and for all.
Zane pushed open the door to the private dining room. Nadia was sitting inside alone.
When she saw him enter, she offered a cold, detached greeting. "Mr. Whitaker."
Zane nodded politely. "Good evening, Nadia."
Noticing her icy demeanor—she hadn't even pretended to stand up to greet him—he figured there was a massive chance she despised him.
Zane was thrilled on the inside, but he couldn't be entirely sure. Many high-society heiresses acted aloof in the beginning.
He poured her a cup of water and asked courteously, "Is there anything you'd like to eat, Nadia? I can have the kitchen prepare it."
"Whatever," she replied bluntly.
Zane opened the menu. "How about the Filet Mignon?"
"Whatever."
"The Lobster Bisque?"
"Whatever."
"The Spicy Jambalaya?"
"Whatever."
Zane snapped the menu shut and turned to the waiter. "We'll take all of those. Add two sides of rice."
The waiter looked slightly panicked. "Sir, we don't serve Spicy Jambalaya here."
"Then tell the executive chef to make it anyway. Tell him it's what I want tonight."
"Right away, sir." Just as the waiter turned to leave, Zane called him back.
"Bring a pitcher of juice. It's just the two of us, so half-portions for everything will be fine."
