The next day, Jasper walked in to find Zane looking completely defeated, a stark contrast to his arrogant swagger from the morning before.
"Did Mrs. Sterling give you a hard time?" Jasper asked.
"Shut up. I'm in a terrible mood, so don't test me right now," Zane snapped.
"Are you still planning on doing all that useless, extra work?"
"Obviously. Have you ever known me to quit halfway?" Zane barked, before ordering Jasper to go make coffee.
Jasper rolled his eyes, assuming Elara had just brushed him off again.
Despite everything, the heavy lifting for Vance Properties still needed to be done.
After tossing and turning all night, Zane had finally come to terms with Elara's lack of feelings for him.
He had been entirely too arrogant before.
She had spent a decade entangled with Julian. Letting go of a love like that might take her an entire lifetime.
Perhaps she would never truly be able to let it go.
But what did any of that have to do with his love for her?
He didn't ask for anything in return. He was more than willing to solve her problems and clear her path, completely unconditionally. So, he didn't need to demand an endgame.
By the time Jasper returned with the coffee, Zane had successfully given himself a pep talk and was already buried in paperwork.
He scribbled down the names of several key government departments on a notepad and slid it across the desk. "Book dinners with the directors of these departments."
Jasper scanned the list. It was blatantly obvious who this networking was for.
"Boss, what kind of spell did she cast on you? Are you really going to keep working yourself like a dog for her with your eyes closed?"
Zane didn't even bother looking up. "I'm doing this so your years of hard work don't go down the drain."
"If you dare sabotage my career, I'll fight you to the death," Jasper threatened.
Zane scoffed. "With your level of competence, do I really need to sabotage anything?"
"Whatever. You and Sebastian are just the two massive mountains standing between me and Serafina."
"The biggest mountain standing in your way is that Serafina simply doesn't like you," Zane fired back ruthlessly.
